Channels, Propagation and Antennas for Mobile Communications
Written by two leading experts in the field, this exceptional book introduces the reader to the principles, theory and applications of physical layer wireless/mobile communications. In the area of wireless, the antennas, propagation and the radio channel used are inter-related; this book offers an explanation of that relationship, which is fundamental to the development of systems with high spectral efficiency.

Channels, Propagation and Antennas for Mobile Communications emphasises the basic principles needed to establish an understanding of this technology. However, the tools required - such as the mathematics and statistics - are treated in the manner of a practical handbook, avoiding detailed derivations. The reader will develop a clear insight into the physics and effects of multipath and the use of multipath channels for communications. Propagation modelling, simulation and measurement, scattering, antenna principles, array antennas, adaptive antennas and smart antennas are also covered.

This book will be a valuable reference for senior undergraduates and postgraduates in electrical engineering and communications. Practising design engineers, systems designers and engineering managers will also gain a sound understanding of the field.

About the Author

Rodney Vaughan is senior research engineer at Industrial Research Limited, New Zealand. He has degrees in electrical engineering from the Universityof Canterbury, New Zealand, and gained his Ph.D. from Aalborg University, Denmark. Since then he has worked for Telecom NZ and Industrial Research Limited. For the latter he established research and development groups in signal processing and multipath communications. Applications include designs in antennas and signal processing, which have been used widely. In addition to his work on many industrial projects, his research includes topics in multipath, signal processing and multiport antennas, and he has published over 100 papers and conference contributions.

Jørgen Bach Andersen is the director of the Center for PersonKommunikation and Professor of Wireless Communications at Aalborg Universityin Denmark. He gained his degree and Ph.D. from the Technical Universityof Denmark in 1961 and 1971 respectively. His research has focused on radio propagation, antennas and signal processing, as well as biomedical studies related to electromagnetic waves. He has been active in European cooperation with the COST framework for wireless communications and has served on several COST management committees. He has published over 200 papers and conference contributions, and contributed to nine books. A former vice president of URSE, and former chairman of URSI Commissions B and K, he is a Life Fellow of IEEE.
