Like Janet and J. Lo, hip-hop soul princess Ashanti can carry an infectious tune. And while she may never wail like Whitney or Mariah, the 22-year-old remains as charismatic as ever on the follow-up to her multiplatinum, eponymous debut. To remind listeners of her impressive hit list, Chapter II opens with an "Intro/Medley" of Ashanti's 2002 chart-toppers, including "Foolish" and the Ja Rule collaboration, "Always on Time." Like Ashanti -- which jacked beats from DeBarge and the Gap Band -- Chapter II heavily samples old-school R&B gems. Digging deeper in the crates, on "Rain on Me," Ashanti purrs over Isaac Hayes's funked-up version of Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love," and "Feel So Good" glides on the bubbling bass groove of Barry White's "Playing Your Game, Baby." Aside from the production's crisper, classic soul vibe, the most notable difference between Chapter II and its predecessor is the absence of Ja Rule -- perhaps he's salty that Ashanti's star is rising while his thanks in part to 50 Cent's incessant disses is dimming. In Ja's place is fellow Murder Inc. labelmate Chink Santana, who lends his lithe, drawled rhymes to several tracks, including the bluesy "Then Ya Gone." While Ashanti is no substitute for the alluring Aaliyah, even haters have to give baby girl props for penning memorable, radio-friendly R&B.
Entertainment Weekly - Tom Sinclair
The production (by Gotti) is refreshingly old school. "Rain on Me" gives off a blaxploitation soundtrack vibe, while "Rock Wit U (Awww Baby)" transcends its clichéd title by recalling Minnie Riperton. [B-]

    her best cd ever

i think this cd is a far more better cd than her other cd self titled because she just sounds more mature and sounds like she knows what shes doing alot better that what she was doing on her debut album....the est song on this cd is breakup to makeup........a must have to everybody all around the world and if you do not have it you need to get smacked up side your head for not having one of the best cds of 2003........

    Ashanti Chapter 2

I admit it, when I first got this album, I was so disapointed. I really didnt listen to the lyrics of the songs. But once I got out of my relationship w/ my boyfriend, I started listening to it again. The lyrics are so beautiful, and I can really relate to them. Ashanti has made another great album!

Bangin' and Better Than The 1st!

Ashant's sophomore album was without a doubt one of the best R&B albums to come out in 2003. Its bumpin' beats, smooth vocals, and heartfelt lyrics keep me listening to it all day long! Ashanti even looks better on the cover. She's like wine-gets better as time goes by. If she keeps up the excellent work, I'm sure Ashanti will become the soulful R&B diva that she's destined to be.

    this album really sucks!!

I loved Ashanti's first album, but this is the worst album I bought this year. The whole album sounds old, and the lyrics aren't even that good. The only truely good song on the cd is her first single, then she looses it. I would not recommed this to anyone, it is definitly not worth the money.

    A Very Solid Effort!

I wasn't sure what to expect after all the controversy and stuff after her first self-titled cd, but I was definitely pleased with what I got. I don't think this cd will have as many hit singles as the first one, but I do believe it is the better of the two. Other than a few very annoying skits, this cd is pretty tight throughout. The producers Irv Gotti and Chink Santana do a good job with the music. The music has a very good variety to it, thanks to the live instruments that were used. Although a lot of people question her vocal ability, I never have. I've always liked her voice, and thought she handled her vocals even better on this album. One of my favorite songs is the very funky and very infectious "Rock Wit U." This song will heat up any dancfloor. There are other fast or mid-tempo songs like "I Found Lovin'" and "Living My Life" that also catch fire. The slower quiet-storm type songs are probably the best songs on here though. These songs include: I Don't Mind, The Story Of 2, Sweet Baby, Rain On Me, and Feels So Good. "I Don't Mind" has her singing in kind of a very sexy falsetto. That song is sure to set the mood right for lovers trust me. "Rain On Me" is also a very sexy song that she sings very well, especially towards the end where she harmonizes very nicely. I usually don't like a lot of sampled songs, but her song "Feels So Good" that samples the late great Barry White's "Playing Your Game, Baby" is now my favorite song on the cd. Ashanti's riffs on this song will surprise lots of people. There were a few songs like "Carry on" & "Then Ya Gone" that I didn't care for. The main thing is that I enjoyed most of the them. Give it a try, because you'll probably be pleasantly surprised.

GOOD THE FIRST GREAT THE SECOND TIME

CHAPTER 2 IS GREAT CD. I THINK ASHANTI SHOULD STOP WORKING WITH JUST IRV GOTTI AND CHINK. BUT LET PRODUCERS LIKE DARK CHILD, MISSY ELLIOT, TIMBERLAND. HER BEATS ARE GOOD BUT THEY SOUND LIKE THEY DID IT OFF A FISHER PRICE KEYBOARD. ASHANTI IS GOOD WRITER THOUGH AND SINGING IS UP TO PART.

    Much Better Ashanti!

Ashanti's "Chapter II" is a great improvment from the first CD, "Ashanti." Her first CD had about 2-3 good songs and then the rest sort of died out. In her new CD though, she gives her songs a new theme and with better beats than before. I recommend this CD!

    Give the girl her props

Even though Ashanti still needs to work on some of her singing tones, the cd is good. She needs 2 stop taking everybody's beats though. The beats are amazing. Rock With You,Break Up 2 Makeups,I Found Lovin,Rain On Me,Feel So Good,Story of 2,Ooh Aah,Sweet Baby, and I Don't Mind are my favorites. So I gotta give u your props girl. Its betta than Beyonce's.

    Smooth as Butter

Ashanti's voice is charming, cute, sweet, and as smooth as butter. Her beauty, inevitable, sexy, and very stunning. Her style, very real. And her music, very defined in the best R&B sound that this year has ever concieved. Her new album, Chapter 2, is very independent, adventurous, and unique for a sophomore album. With every ballad and R&B song, it's very coherent to see that Ashanti has truly made a landmark in herself and is proud of this accomplishment. Most artists that release their sophomore title after their debut always explain, "The first album wasn't me, this second album is." Well, we can see here that Ashanti's personal growth had no limits or boundaries, nothing seemed to defer her from being herself as an artists, not a marketing machine. It's as if her artistry in the music has elevated to larger heights, and the album in itself seems far more mature, as if it has been upgraded to its senior. Each song is truly refreshing. Since her voice croons through each song, (not all loud and high strung like most artists today that seem to concentrate more on raising attention on themselves than the music), croozing through this album is quite a ride through the light of heaven.

    ashanti fan

Ashanti is a beautiful, talented artist who was born for stardom. She really moves me, and her music is like an inspiration. I have yet to get this album, and when i do, i'm sure gonna get a kick out of it. For all of you fans out there, I'm sure you agree with me when i say that her new single, "ride with me..awwww baby" is a hit. I rate that song 4 and a half stars.

All of these tracks on her album just overflows soul, power, youth, life, and passion! Listeners will drown into each song that cries as soft as wind and as gentle as rain! Ashanti: Chapter II

I personally loved Ashanti first CD and looking forward to the next CD. Ashanti latest single is hot. I wouldn't consider Ashanti dethroning Janet or J. Lo, there is room for all of them (all are talented). Ashanti's future looks promising!!!!!

    What a star!

Ashanti was born to be a star. She is so beautiful in every way, and her music truly is an inspiration. If only she knew how much I love her. Ashanti has great talent, and is capapble of doing anything once her mind is set. Way to go with your new album. I've heard one of the songs, and it totally rocks! You go girl!
