With his engaging debut, Chariot, Clive Davis protégé Gavin DeGraw is poised to follow in the impressive footsteps of ivory-tickling singer-songwriters such as Billy Joel, Ben Folds, and even Stevie Wonder. The confident, charismatic 26-year-old will win the hearts of swooning female fans with infectious songs that run the gamut from the soft rock of "Over-Rated" to the Wonder-reminiscent title song to the chiming, Mathew Sweet–ish power pop of "Crush." The glossy yet soulful Chariot features contributions from guitarist Michael Ward (Wallflowers) and drummer Joey Waronker (R.E.M./Beck), but DeGraw's supple voice is the real star. Seductive and surprisingly mature, DeGraw swoops, whispers, and even hollers with gospel-style fervor as he sings his sophisticated, mostly mellow love songs, such as the affirmative "Belief," on which he croons: "Belief makes things real / Makes things feel alright / Belief makes things true / Like you and I." So kick back with your honey -- and a bottle of your favorite vino -- and let DeGraw's voice and words make a believer of you.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
Not as baroque as Rufus Wainwright, and more downtown than Matchbox Twenty, but embodying elements of both acts, Gavin DeGraw's J Records debut is a strong showcase for his soulful wail and piano playing, even if it's occasionally grayed out by bells-and-whistles production that pushes it too strongly toward beigeist AAA accessibility. DeGraw's willowy vocal on opener "Follow Through" brings to mind Jeff Buckley, even if the cut is musically vacant adult alterna-whatever, but the title track and "Just Friends" are much better. There's meaningful sway in the piano, and palpable bitterness/hurt in DeGraw's vocal on the latter. "You were just friends/At least that's what you said," he sings. "Now I know better/From his fingers in your hair." It's a nice little lyric, adding impressive emotional gravity to an easily identifiable everyday moment. The flirty "Chemical Party" crosses chunky electric guitar with easy twang and vintage R&B -- it's a stylistic match with label mates Maroon 5, who took the same cocktail to number one and beyond with 2002's Songs About Jane. While the majority of Chariot follows a similar, basically catchy path, it can be hard to locate DeGraw inside the soundalike arrangements of "Crush" or "(Nice to Meet You) Anyway." Even "I Don't Want to Be," which enjoyed placement as the theme to the WB's high-school-and-perfect-cheekbones drama One Tree Hill, only makes an impression during its rousing chorus. Still, DeGraw's piano and vocal work is strong enough to keep Chariot largely on course, and mark it as a promising, mainstream-ready debut.
Rolling Stone - James Hunter
Chariot is a brash rock-accented pop album that sounds like it could have been recorded anytime in the last twenty-five years...
Time Out New York - Margeaux Watson
A soulful white boy who sings pop rock with the intensity of a bluesy crooner, DeGraw's original songs evoke Van Morrison or early Billy Joel.

In his debut album, Gavin offers a taste of what's to come from a singer/songwriter destined for stardom. Gavin has it all. An amazing live performer who writes and plays his own material, Gavin sounds great in the studio and his voice has never sounded better. From the clear, clean easy sounds of 'Follow Through' to the more intense title track 'Chariot', to the fun and rock sensibility of 'Chemical Party', this is an album full of memorable lyrics, haunting tunes and killer hooks. Give Chariots a spin and you'll see why Gavin DeGraw was called the best kept secret in NYC by Time Out magazine.

With excellent timing of the release of his album, Gavin Degraw performed "charriot tonight on the WB network. If this guy wrote that song he is going places, soon. The group played a cool tune blending the styles of Ben Folds and Van Morrison. I never heard of this guy before and only saw him while scanning channels. The song was great but the irony of seeing these young artists play sophistocated music for audience of pre-adolescent children was laughable.

I heard Gavin DeGraw for the first time on the "Pepsi Smash" concert series and found his sound instantly enjoyable. The blues and rock combination, added to his apparent low-key style are unbeatable. He will be around for a while!

Graceful Gavin is a breath of fresh air to us "Guys with Guitars" fanatics. His piano introduces a fresh perspective, the clarity of his voice and moving rythyms put you into a mood for the upcoming autumn. His lyrics are deep and meaningful, I mean, who can't relate to "I don't want to anything other than what I've trying to be lately?", in his attempt to get the world to back off! Very well written, more than listenable, Gavin is going to make it big! Buy the album, you won't be disapointed!

Gavin DeGraw has put an amazing effort into this album! This cd is a must listen to from track one until the last note is played. His bluesy vocals and strong instrumental backup is a force to be heard. I have recommended this to all of my friends and suggest you do the same.

After waiting patiently for months for Gavin DeGraw's CD to come out, I picked it up on July 22nd and listened to it over and over. Before Gavin's cd came out, "[Nice To Meet You] Anyway" and "I Don't Want To Be" were my FAVORITE Gavin songs, but after one time listening to "Over-Rated", I couldn't pick favorites anymore. AHHHH they're all soooo great! Piano Rock ROCKS!!! This New York City guy is gonna make it BIG.

Chariot is a rare gem; an album that leaves you with a feeling of optimism and entusiasm for life, as well as for the state of music. I don't think it's possible to get tired of this album. I have already listened to it over and over again, and the emotion in Gavin Degraw's voice draws me in every time. The melodies are catchy but original, he is a true songwriter and you can feel the difference between this album and some of the manufactured collections of songs that are available at the moment. Gavin is a breath of fresh air and I look forward to many more albums from this amazingly talented musician.

As a lover of all things music, I'm always looking for new artists to get into. When I came across Gavin Degraw on a message board a few months ago I was ecstatic! His remarkable voice and his talent for playing, singing, and writing music is amazing! His style reminds me a bit of Jason Mraz with upbeat music and a hint of jazz. This album is his first, and will definitely not be his last! It's full of catchy songs that will knock you off your seat! If you're into Mraz, John Mayer, or any other acoustic/singer-songwriter music, (or even if you're not) CHECK HIM OUT!!! I promise you WON'T regret it!

For those who haven't heard of Gavin before, here's an opportunity to listen to one of the future's brightest stars. Legendary music mogul Clive Davis has likened Gavin to a young Billy Joel or Elton John, with the soul of a Joe Jackson. The truth is, Gavin has the talent and charisma to surpass these legends. His stunning debut album is a well-though out, soulful, perfectly appropriate blend of Gavin's sexy smoky voice, his stellar songwriting skills, and his accomplished playing of both the piano and the guitar. Many of the songs are well-suited to radio airplay, but it is the few that are more personal and emotive that are the album's true gems. "Meaning" has fantastic lyrics and Gavin is able to display his vocal range. Gavin was named New York's "Best Kept Secret" by well-known magazine Time Out NY, and for good reason. This singer/songwriter has a massive career in his future. On a more personal note, I have both seen Gavin in concert and met him afterwards. His concert was one of the most exciting and emotional that I've been to and he is one of the sweetest, most humble, down to earth guys that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He truly cares about his fans and I absolutely recommend this cd to everyone.

Gavin Degraw doesnt disappoint, his CD is awesome, you will love him. He has a unique self expressing style of music. He surprises you with a totally different style and beat in every song. If you dont know who he is, buy his CD, trust me, you will most definately like it!!!! I made all my friends listen to him for the first time, and within a time span of 3 days, they went out and bought his CD!!!

I fell in love with Gavin's music the first time I heard "Follow through". It is just that catchy and great to listen to. I bought the cd the first day it came out and was not surprised that I loved every track on the record. I saw him open for Sister Hazel in Nashville on the 18th of July and was blown away by his amazing stage presence and vocal abilitiy. It is always get to hear a beautiful, perfect pitched voice on the cd when even better when they can create that same exact sound and give you the same feeling as listening to the cd or an even better feel. If you love soothing, piano lined tunes with a touch of pop/rock then you will love Gavin. Definitely pick up this cd.

This is an excellent CD... he is a very talented guy! If you like John Mayer or Billy Joel, you'll love Gavin!!

He's been compared to everyone from a young Ray Charles to a young Billy Joel, but the truth is that Gavin DeGraw has got a voice all his own. Borrowing equally from both rock and R&B, Chariot is infused with a new sound and a new voice that's rarely heard in music today. Just as talented a songwriter as he is a singer/musician, DeGraw is one of those kind of artists that you hear and you say to yourself, "This guy's got a long career ahead of him." While all of the tracks on this album are great, I can't help but to reccommend my favorites: "Just Friends," "I Don't Want To Be" and "More Than Anyone," one of the best love songs to come along in quite some time. I can't praise this album enough. Buy it and you'll thank me (and Gavin) later.

Gavin's Opening song - Follow Through - says it all - "This is the start of something good - don't you agree". Gavin's lyrics vibrate with a passion for life and relationships. I Don't Wanna Be is a mantra for all young people who are strong enough to be themselves - and not to cave in to being someone other than themselves. This album is one of those rare collections where every song has something to say and the delivery is top notch.
