Chariot

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - L.D. Beghtol
With his engaging debut, Chariot, Clive Davis protégé Gavin DeGraw is poised to follow in the impressive footsteps of ivory-tickling singer-songwriters such as Billy Joel, Ben Folds, and even Stevie Wonder. The confident, charismatic 26-year-old will win the hearts of swooning female fans with infectious songs that run the gamut from the soft rock of "Over-Rated" to the Wonder-reminiscent title song to the chiming, Mathew Sweet–ish power pop of "Crush." The glossy yet soulful Chariot features contributions from guitarist Michael Ward (Wallflowers) and drummer Joey Waronker (R.E.M./Beck), but DeGraw's supple voice is the real star.
Seductive and surprisingly mature, DeGraw swoops, whispers, and even hollers with gospel-style fervor as he sings his sophisticated, mostly mellow love songs, such as the affirmative "Belief," on which he croons: "Belief makes things real / Makes things feel alright / Belief makes things true / Like you and I." So kick back with your honey -- and a bottle of your favorite vino -- and let DeGraw's voice and words make a believer of you.
All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
Not as baroque as Rufus Wainwright, and more downtown than Matchbox Twenty, but embodying elements of both acts, Gavin DeGraw's J Records debut is a strong showcase for his soulful wail and piano playing, even if it's occasionally grayed out by bells-and-whistles production that pushes it too strongly toward beigeist AAA accessibility. DeGraw's willowy vocal on opener "Follow Through" brings to mind Jeff Buckley, even if the cut is musically vacant adult alterna-whatever, but the title track and "Just Friends" are much better. There's meaningful sway in the piano, and palpable bitterness/hurt in DeGraw's vocal on the latter. "You were just friends/At least that's what you said," he sings. "Now I know better/From his fingers in your hair." It's a nice little lyric, adding impressive emotional gravity to an easily identifiable everyday moment. The flirty "Chemical Party" crosses chunky electric guitar with easy twang and vintage R&B -- it's a stylistic match with label mates Maroon 5, who took the same cocktail to number one and beyond with 2002's Songs About Jane. While the majority of Chariot follows a similar, basically catchy path, it can be hard to locate DeGraw inside the soundalike arrangements of "Crush" or "Nice to Meet You Anyway." Even "I Don't Want to Be," which enjoyed placement as the theme to the WB's high-school-and-perfect-cheekbones drama One Tree Hill, only makes an impression during its rousing chorus. Still, DeGraw's piano and vocal work is strong enough to keep Chariot largely on course, and mark it as a promising, mainstream-ready debut.
Rolling Stone - James Hunter
Chariot is a brash rock-accented pop album that sounds like it could have been recorded anytime in the last twenty-five years...
Time Out New York - Margeaux Watson
A soulful white boy who sings pop rock with the intensity of a bluesy crooner, DeGraw's original songs evoke Van Morrison or early Billy Joel.

Chariot is a brash rock-accented pop album that sounds like it could have been recorded anytime in the last twenty-five years...

    Gavin DeGraw making it big!!

If you've not heard of this up and coming talented singer I advise you to go to his website and check out a few songs off his debut album "Chariot". Chariot is one of the best albums I have ever listened to and I gaurentee there is something on it for everyone! With his huge hit with "I don't want to be" the theme song to "One Tree Hill" Gavin has become a known name all over the world with his pop rock and mellow songs! The music is unbelievable to listen to with songs such as "Chariot" and "Just friends" he'll have you hooked in no time. "Chariot" is now available in all record stores or you can buy it here at a bargain price.

    Chariot

Chariot is a sensational album by a sensational singer. An album full of great songs and lyrics sung by a great voice this is a must have album. I bought this album about a year ago and it still hasn't left my cd player, this is a kind of album I never get tired of listening to. Also it's not very common for me to buy an album and love every song on it, but Chariot is an album where I love every song. My favourites would definately be Just Friends, Chemical Party and Chariot.

SO RAW, SO REAL, YOU CAN'T HELP BUT RELATE TO GAVIN DEGRAW's CHARIOT ALBUM ON A PERSONAL LEVEL!!!

When I was first introduced to Gavin DeGraw's music, I was completely blown away. It has been a long time since real music was created-not manufactured-that crosses all generations and genders. His soulful singing as well as his heartfelt lyrics makes for a CD that is a must have. Written by Gavin himself- you can't help but feel you have been invited into his heart and soul after listening to his music. He inspires you to be comfortable in your own skin regardless of who you are and where you come from with " I don't want to be". I can't stop moving or tapping when I listen to it! I can't listen to it enough. You get two CD's in the Chariot stripped version. One is the studio produced version and the second is a raw live version of the same songs. FANTASTIC... It's like being at the concert in your own home or car. It's a must have!

    Breath Of Fresh Air

Turn on the radio right now and what will you hear? Enldess songs telling stories of sex, drinking, and, well, shaking your "thang". These kinds of songs were taking over the airwaves until a few months ago, a young man burst into the scene with a song called "I Don't Want To Be". Yes, you know him, Gavin DeGraw. He took the music world by storm with his first single and don't think that he's just another one hit wonder. He's back with another single, "Chariot", which is doing just as well. When I first heard Gavin, it was on the theme song of the hit tv show "One Tree Hill". Something about his voice and the lyrics to the song drew me in, so I went right away and got his album. Every song has its own unique sound and Gavin brings a soulful edge to each. There are some upbeat songs ("I Dont Want To Be", "Chariot", "Chemical Party"), but it wouldn't be a complete album without the beautiful ballads ("Meaning", "More Than Anyone", "Belief", "Just Friends"). I highly reccomend this CD for any collection. Its garaunteed to be a classic.

CHARIOT is the kind of music you can relate to

Gavin DeGraw's album Chariot is defenitely a wonderful CD. His words are so honest. You can just hear it in his amazing voice. Even if you haven't heard of Gavin DeGraw, this would be a great CD for you to buy. The music is almost addicting. His intimate words and breathtaking vocals will get you hooked. He also plays the piano and guitar. Gavin is truly an inspiring musician.

    The next Billy Joel

I saw Gavin Degraw for the first time ever at an Avril concert. His songs were not hard to listen to unlike that crazy guy who had opened up for Avril. I was praying that guy would stop singing but then Gavin came on the stage next and it was wonderful. The combination of piano, guaiar and drums was astonishing. I did not know any of the words yet I was totally captivate by his voice and music. I just bought his 2 for one CD that has all of his songs. It is awesome he reminds me of Billy Joel mixed with Ray Charles he is awesome and I can't wait to hear his next creation.

    Favorite CD in my player

I thought this album is one of the best put out in the past few years. Gavin DeGraw has such raw talent, it's not doctored up like other artists. He's not afraid to show grit and I love that in an artist. Perhaps the best song on the album is "Belief". This song could be such a huge hit, just like "I Don't Want To Be" was. It has so much soul and love put into it. A song like this can really move a person. Another favorite is "Chemical Party". The catchy chorus really gets stuck in your head. And the lyrics are quite interesting if you really listen to them. That song always makes me kind laugh because I think everyone knows someone like the girl in the song. So in closing I would reccomend that if you haven't thought about getting it, think again. It will be money very well spent. And while you're at it pick up Chariot:Stripped.

    Gavin Rocks!

Gavin's CD is so awsome. It's my favorite CD I own and have ever listened to. Gavin is such an awsome singer/songwriter. All of his songs are amazing. They are very inspiring and entertaining. If you don't have this CD then something is wrong with you because I can't even begin to explain how good it is. You can feel all of Gavin's emotions that he put into it and that's what you get out of it. Gavin sings, plays the piano and guitar, writes all his own songs, and he is very HOT.If that isn't enough to make you buy the CD then you will never know what real music is.

    amazing cd

Gavin Degraw is so amazingly talented. This album is great.. and his shows are even better. I higly recommend this album to anybody who loves real, honest music. The Chariot cd is great but i personally love the stripped version better, so i recommend buying the chariot with the stripped. This is one of those cds where i love every song on there, which doesn't happen much for me. The lyrics are so consumig and beautiful.. and the music is timeless BUY THIS ALBUM!! you won't regret it.. its amazing.

    REAL Music

As a person who prefers to download music rather than invest in mediocre CDs, you will be surprised to learn that I purchased Chariot and Chariot Stripped when it was re-released. Gavin DeGraw is the real deal. His music shows the talent of a skilled pianist, lyricist, and vocalist. His music is laced with themes that can span any demographic. From the betrayal of "Just Friends" to the determination of "I Don't Want to Be" this album is one that can be played from start to finish with out skipping a track. Definately worth purchasing, and get ready to invest in more Gavin DeGraw, as this artist will be around for a lifetime.
