With his engaging debut, Chariot, Clive Davis protégé Gavin DeGraw is poised to follow in the impressive footsteps of ivory-tickling singer-songwriters such as Billy Joel, Ben Folds, and even Stevie Wonder. The confident, charismatic 26-year-old will win the hearts of swooning female fans with infectious songs that run the gamut from the soft rock of "Over-Rated" to the Wonder-reminiscent title song to the chiming, Mathew Sweet–ish power pop of "Crush." The glossy yet soulful Chariot features contributions from guitarist Michael Ward (Wallflowers) and drummer Joey Waronker (R.E.M./Beck), but DeGraw's supple voice is the real star. Seductive and surprisingly mature, DeGraw swoops, whispers, and even hollers with gospel-style fervor as he sings his sophisticated, mostly mellow love songs, such as the affirmative "Belief," on which he croons: "Belief makes things real / Makes things feel alright / Belief makes things true / Like you and I." So kick back with your honey -- and a bottle of your favorite vino -- and let DeGraw's voice and words make a believer of you.
All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
After receiving strong notices from the New York press for his fiery club performances, Gavin DeGraw signed with J Records and issued Chariot, his debut, in July 2003. But while it had promise, Chariot also suffered from a lack of imagination in the production department. There was no denying the humanity and bawdy soul wrapped up in DeGraw's voice, so why was it stifled by unimaginative, mainstream-leaning production? It's unclear what exactly prompted it perhaps the album's slow burn rise on the charts?, but a full year later DeGraw's Chariot was re-released. However, this time around, the original studio version was joined by a song-for-song acoustic reading of Chariot, and the rawer presentation is exactly what it needed. The basic setup of drums, bass, acoustic guitar, subtle harmonies, and the piano and untreated vocals of DeGraw kicks out the slickness that shriveled cuts like "Follow Through," "Belief," and "Meaning." Here, they're the leafy greenery of a solid band kicking it on a warm April night in New York City. The title track was already a standout, but in its new, understated guise, there's a comforting Ben Harper quality about it. And the brushed snare is a perfectly subtle touch. "Just Friends" gets a new, mildly funky arrangement, and the cynically funny hedonism jam "Chemical Party" -- "You're just too high to see my point/You think your name is 'Pass the joint'" -- becomes a delightfully ragged jam with overtones of Simon & Garfunkel's "Cecilia." You can just imagine DeGraw kicking the piano stool out after the a cappella singalong breakdown. The effect of this "Stripped" format on DeGraw's music is immediate, and made more apparent by the inclusion of the studio cousin. It's an illustration of how great -- how real -- artists can sound when they aren't constrained by radio-ready sheen.

I'M A RAP FAN AND I LOVE THIS CD, that's how good it is

the intensity of the songs sang in this cd is almost unbearable! It's truth is so raw and the arrangements (musically) are the picasso's of music. The cd starts with an unbelievable energy that continues out throughout the entire cd ( even through the more mellow songs you can feel the realness). I bought this cs twice, one for the car and one for the house because I must never be without Gavin DeGraw!!

    Much ado about nothin'

I was first hooked into the sound of this imposter when I heard "I Don't Wanna Be" being performed on one of those teen soap step-children of Dawson's Creek. I was impressed by the catchy chorus and that a band actually sounded like a band on a TV show. It made me curious enough to explore further and I purchased the CD. My misfortune. Aside from "I Don't Wanna Be," there's nothing else here that is either interesting, fresh or new- merely a series of rambling R & B or folk-rock retreads. DeGraw admittedly has a pretty good voice but the writing is amateurish. On one number, he wails: "I think you're fine, still I haven't got the time. . ." Give me a break! More of this sophomoric tripe inhabits the verses of the other simple, forgettable tracks as well. One playing reveals that you've heard all of this before and it is clear that this whole thing has been purposely packaged for the MOR crowd (he's a Clive Davis discovery). The slick production, made more attractive by the deft hand of a sly producer weaving a catchy intro here or slick segue there, does not mitigate the dullness. The absence of originality condemns this to the back shelf. Pass.

    I'm Singing outLoud

This CD gives me hope in the Music indusrty!!! His vocals are amazing and the fact that he writes his own material and plays piano and gitaur makes him a tripple threat. There is something that makes the CD catchy and that is the relation that we have to the songs, and how they can be moto's for everyday life, like the Title track "Chariot" and the two singles, I Don't Want to Be and Follow Through. This is a must buy and the fact that there are two versons of the album pleases everyone.

    Can't stop listening

I bought Gavin’s album about 6 months ago, I listen to it non-stop. It is one of those records you never get sick of. With such a mix of pop, rock, soul and r&b, this melodic album is nothing but a best seller. Everyone who enjoys music should get a copy of this album, without a doubt I know you’ll love it just as much as I do! Listen to tracks like Chariot, Chemical Party, and Follow through. Not only does it satisfy your listening needs it gives you a feeling of relief to finally hear an artist as true and talented as Mr. Degraw. Check it out you have nothing to loose!!! -- Jena

    A MUST HAVE FOR EVERYONE!!!

This CD is a MUST HAVE!!! Not only do you get to hear his original version of this CD but you also get to hear Gavin put his own personal touch with his live recordings. With a little rock and a little soul mixed together, this album is sure to please everyone. His voice is like none I have ever heard before and when you mix that with his amazing talents on the paino, he is unmatched. Whether it be partying, love, heartache or issues on self image, his songs can relate to anyone. The Stripped album really lets you hear all the raw feelings that he puts behind his music and lyrics. He definitely has a story to tell! There has been a serious lack of REAL musicians lately, with all the studio created songs and sounds. With this Album you don't get any of that. Because he writes all of his own music and lyrics you can really feel passion that he has for his craft. I laughed, I cried, I think I experienced every emotion one could possibly have just listening to this CD. I guarantee that anyone who buys this CD will not only like it, but will love it, and probably play it out just as I have! Gavin Degraw is definitely the new and upcoming Musical Icon that we have so desperately been needing.

    Finally some talent

I was introduced to Gavin DeGraw through the show One Tree Hill. Then I bought the c.d. He is incredibly talented. His music is diverse, and fresh. There is finally some talent in the music business.I assure you that you won't be disappointed.

Proving there is hope for pop music

Gavin DeGraw is one of those rare talents that comes along in pop music with raw talent and great showmanship. Chariot Stripped shows off exactly what DeGraw can do, on the piano and vocally, "stripped" down to the bare essentials of acoustic instruments. Something tells me that Gavin DeGraw is going to be one of those artists that will be around for a long, long time.

You have to listen to believe

When most people think of Gavin DeGraw they think of the song from One Tree Hill. However, he has so many more dimensions than that one song. He has a soulful sound with incredible lyrics. The stripped version is so clean it sounds as if he's singing right in front of you. You can literally hear him take a breath with each note. He's an incredible talent and deserves so much credit for his writing and piano playing ablities. This is definitely a CD to have in your collection.

    Words can't describe...

There aren't words that can describe this CD. Since purchasing it, I haven't taken it out of my stereo. The power of Gavin DeGraw's voice is caputred beautifully in the acoustic renditions of his songs and in the amazing cover of Sam Cooke's "Change is Gonna Come." This double CD attests to the true and unadulterated talent that is Gavin DeGraw.

    Perfect--soup to nuts

This is one of those CDs that I can listen to from beginning to end without hitting any buttons (except maybe the volume up). Radio stations aren't even playing the best songs from this CD.

    Awesome Album!!

I bought this CD about a month ago on a whim. I had heard and liked one of his songs (I Don't Want To Be), and since he has been touring with one of my favorite artists, Michael Tolcher, I decided to buy Chariot. Although I have only owned it for a short time, it has quickly become one of my favorites. It has a unique and soulful sound, and is one the few CD's I own that I can listen to from beginning to end without skipping a single song. Chariot is wonderful, but Stripped only serves as proof of Gavin DeGraw's incomparable talent. Listening to Stripped makes me feel as if I am actually at a live show. There are no pre-recorded vocal or instrumental tracks, everything is 100% real. It is truly an awesome album. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone!

Gavin DeGraw is going to be the next big thing! His voice is incredible, his music is amazing...and he is totally hot! His lyrics are so meaningful and creative...they will make you smile and make you cry. Gavin puts so much emotion into his music, which makes this CD even better! This is the best CD money can buy.

    Okay effort

This cd is alright, but nothing special. I decided to buy it when a friend recommended it to me. The biggest problem is that it only has 11 songs on it. I like cds with a lot of songs on them.

Gavin is the epitome of perfection!

I saw Gavin two days before the release of Stripped in KY and he previewed one of his songs, I couldn't wait to get home to listen to the cd. It was even better than I imagined and it hasn't come out of my cd player since. Listening to his songs and gorgeous voice is all I need. He is not only an amazing artist, but he is so down to earth and hot! This is one of the best cd's you will ever own and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. Gavin is the Elton John of our time and I can't wait to see what he comes out with next. <3

Better than original? Could it be?

I was thrilled when I heard Gavin was coming out with an acoustic version of his first album, Chariot. The songs seem somewhat slower which enables the listener to hear more of Gavin's great voice. I had each song playing in my head all day after listening to it and that put me in a lovely mood for the rest of the day! Bottom line: I love it!
