Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 6 UpThis biography is written in a clear narrative style that is as engaging as it is informative. Quotes from primary and secondary sources are smoothly incorporated into the text or set off by attractive borders, and the frequent black-and-white illustrations include reproductions of original drawings and sculptures and excellent maps showing changes in the Frankish kingdom and the Holy Roman Empire. The carefully documented endnotes for each chapter and the comprehensive index will be useful to researchers. About one-third of the book is devoted to Charles's ancestors and the history of the Frankish kingdom. Since little is known of the subject's childhood, the rest of the book deals with his personal qualities, both negative and positive; historical events in which he played a strong leadership role; and a comprehensive description of his undeniable influence on European history. A slight flaw is the fact that the subject is referred to as "Charles," "Charles the Great," and "Charlemagne" before an explanation of his name is offered. Otherwise this is an impressive introductory title.Phyllis Graves, Creekwood Middle School, Kingwood, TX
