Overview

Ever since October 1967, when he set off in a battered motor home to explore America and talk to its people, Charles Kuralt has been one of our premier chroniclers, a man who has helped us to see and celebrate our country in a way we never had before. He takes us to Montana in September and Alaska in June, deep into Cajun country in winter and along the North Carolina mountains in spring. He explores Charleston and the Florida Keys, the coast of Maine and the deserts of New Mexico, the boundary waters of northern Minnesota and the back roads of Vermont when the oaks and maples turn to crimson and gold. Throughout, his accounts are filled with people, stories, and experiences; suffused by a poet's love of language; rich in the spirit and flavor of this infinite and varied land. Here is a book of pure reading pleasure - like its author, a national treasure.

Although he retired from CBS News in 1994, Kuralt has not retired from his wanderings. Filled with the stories of people and their experiences, suffused by a poet's love of language, and rich in the spirit and flavor of America, the accounts in the latest book by the author of Life on the Road take readers from Cajun country to the North Carolina mountains to the pleasures of Monterrey Bay.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Former CBS newsman Kuralt's tales from the road spent 17 weeks on PW's bestseller list. (Oct.)
Library Journal
After serving 37 years as a reporter at CBS, Kuralt retired and set out on a trip to see his favorite American locations at their best. During the course of a year, he traveled across the country and stopped, for example, at Charleston, South Carolina, for the azaleas in March and Woodstock, Vermont, for the fall colors in October. In this journal, the author records the people, places, and pets he encountered. One of the most interesting chapters in the book is the final one, set in Manhattan, Kuralt's hometown, in December. Kuralt describes small-town New York, a large city composed of tiny, personal neighborhoods. This pleasant, genial book will be of interest to Kuralt fans. Recommended for public libraries.-Caroline Mitchell, Washington, D.C.
Donna Seaman
When popular reporter Kuralt left CBS after 37 years, he didn't think of it as retirement but as liberation. Having reached his sixties, Kuralt realized it was time to give free rein to his curiosity. So he planned a dream trip, a journey to his favorite places in America. As he describes his first port of call, New Orleans, we catch the drift of his entire breezy, happy-go-lucky travel narrative. Kuralt takes full advantage of his privilege and ease in the world, partaking of good food, beautiful scenery, and an inordinate amount of stimulating conversations with everyone from a cab driver reminiscing about his family to Ellis Marsalis talking jazz in his office at New Orleans University. Kuralt travels on to Key West, then Charleston, where he admires the gorgeous mansions while poking good-natured fun at the "aristocracy." Soon he moves to cooler climes: Alaska, where the sight of a blue whale stuns him so much he can't even take a photograph; Maine, Vermont, Montana, Minnesota, and, finally, New York at Christmas. It's no surprise that a friend cultivated and named a daffodil after Kuralt: he's one sunshiny fellow, and his America is just splendid in its geographic and cultural variations.
From Barnes & Noble
In 1967, journalist Charlie Kuralt set off in a battered motor home to explore America firsthand. In this wonderful memoir, Kuralt recounts his adventures all across the country, from Alaska to Cajun country, & from northern Minnesota to the Florida Keys. B&W photos.
