Overview

Charley Harper was an American original. For more than six decades he painted colorful and graphic illustrations of nature, animals, insects and people alike, from his home studio in Cincinnati, Ohio, until he passed away in 2007, at the age of 84. Renowned New York-based designer Todd Oldham rediscovered Charley's work in 2001, and collaborated closely with him in the ensuing years; combing through his extensive archive to edit and design this stunning monograph. This new "mini" edition is a popularly priced, beautiful tribute to Charley Harper's singular style, which he referred to as Minimal Realism.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"This gorgeously reproduced overview of the work of American modernist Charley Harper is a labor of love from Todd Oldham. ... Oldham's tribute to his hero (who died in 2007, at age 84) floats on the wings of these beautiful creatures and Harper's expressive, one-of-a-kind talent." —NPR

I was reacquainted with the work of Charley Harper a while back from a piece about him on CBS Sunday Morning. I instantly reconnected to his work as I did as a grade school boy, only now through more mature eyes could I also see the work of an artist, not just an illustrator. I was thrilled to find this collection of his work in Barnes and Noble and felt I had to have it to stroll down memory lane to recreate the joy that went along with learning as a child and recognize how important and special Harper's vivid imagery was to that process. It did sadden me to learn later that this wonderful collection was not made in the USA. The book does a good job of burying this fact in the last pages in small print. It is not that the quality of the work done in China is poor, it is actually quite good. It is ironic, though, that it is probably the first time Mr. Harper's images were ever printed overseas, fortunately not in his lifetime. My joy to own this book was diminished by this betrayal, which I will point out to those (adults) that I want to share this book with or whovever picks it up. Judging by the price encoded on the book, it is certainly priced as if it were made in America. I will look more closely before purchasing another Ammo Book.

Harper's art is beautiful and imaginative. His use of colors on the creatures he draws is very striking. The creatures tend to be both whimisical and realistic, sometimes both, sometimes not.

Comprehensive, beautiful collection of the artist's life work. Well-written essay by Todd Oldham. Truly a delight.

If you are searching for a book that is beautiful, thought provoking, and perception altering, as well as something to keep out for your family and friends to enjoy, Charley Harper's genius is ripe for display in your house. Every page is a revelation, exquisite and simple, detailed and sometimes childlike, colorful and inviting. I have never seen an illustrator with such a marked geometric eye for nature, and possessing the ability to reduce nature to the simplest base lines, shapes, and colors. Harper should be much better known and this book may help boost his reputation. This is a truly wonderful book, brimming with life and genius.
