Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Familiar faces impart a message of conservation, as Charlie and Lola learn the basics of recycling. When Lola declares that she is "throwing everything away," to avoid being messy, Charlie suggests she recycle ("because if we throw everything away, then we will all be completely buried under a massive, huge pile of garbage"). The duo creates a "tree counter," adding new leaves to the branches every time they recycle, and works toward the goal of planting a real tree. Ages 3-5. (Mar.)

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
The brother and sister team of Charlie and Lola, stars of many books, also appear on television. This book is based on a TV script. Inspired by a look into the cluttered room of their friend Marv's brother, Lola decides to stop keeping everything. Charlie suggests that instead of throwing things away, she should recycle them. Charlie describes the need to recycle and the making of new paper from old. In school they encourage their classmates to join them in recycling to earn a tree, which they plant outside. Marv's brother, however, is not happy about what Marv has recycled from his messy room. The visuals, excerpted from the video, consist of sketches and collage including photographs, and are designed to emphasize aspects of the story. A double page shows a huge pile of garbage in black plastic bags; small boxes display the necessary numbers of recycled items; vignettes show the busy student collectors. The brief bits of text are interspersed with the images, exploiting the different sizes of typeface. The cartoon-y characters with large heads add to the humor that joins with the message. The end pages offer suggestions to "help look after your planet"; a poster is also included. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz

    Awesome Bedtime Book!!

My daughter and I absolutely love all the Charlie and Lola series. We read and reread them almost every night. After reading this book, she decided she wanted to recycle. So, now we have a special box just for her to do her own recycling...she is 3. Very engaging read with your child. I highly recommend it!

Perfect Introduction to recycling for young children

My children and I love this book. If your child is a fan of Charlie and Lola, they will especially love it. It illustrates how to recycle and why we recycle, and it shows that recycling can be fun. There is a great sense of community in this book, and it demonstrates the importance of chipping in and helping out.

    Best Birthday Gift to Give!!

My daughters and I really enjoy this book about recycling, so much that we buy one for each of their friend's birthday (along w something personal). It became our signature gift! The pictures are vibrant and the do-it-yourself poster at the end of the book makes the story come to life!
