Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Big brother Charlie narrates this latest tale about his little sister Lola. Her friend Lotta has an extra-special new coat that Lola thinks is "the most loveliest thing" she has ever seen. Lola begs to borrow it, promising to be "especially very careful" to keep it looking new, fluffy, and white. As she proceeds through the supermarket, post office, and rain, she manages with Charlie's help and reassurance to avoid problems. But in the library, where Lola thinks it will be safe, she forgets the coat. When she rushes back it is gone, and she dreads telling Lotta that she has lost it. Fortunately, their friend Minnie has found it and returned it to Lotta, who may think twice about lending Lola anything again. The illustrations, based on the animated "Charlie and Lola" television show, mix sketchy black line drawings with collage. The characters are cartoon-like, with large heads and dominating eyes; the scenes are drawn with minimal settings. They behave like believable kids in situations that are amusing but real.
