Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Charlie Bone hears voices. Not just any voices—he hears voices of people in paintings and photographs. As one of the endowed children descended from the Red King, Charlie is part of a magical, mysterious group trying to keep the forces of good in the world balanced with the forces of evil. In this latest installment in the "Charlie Bone" series, readers begin a new school year with Charlie and a new cast of interesting characters. A new teacher, Tantalus Ebony, is frighteningly stern at times and at others, droopingly drowsy. A new student seems to be literally magnetic and up to no good. Surrounded by old friends and new, Charlie sets out to save his friend Billy from his new adopted parents, while investigating a mysterious phantom horse and a castle made of mirrors. Despite his unusual abilities, Charlie remains an approachable, empathetic character as he struggles with his personal desire to find his missing father. The cast of characters and their magical abilities is vast, and a genealogy chart and prologue are necessary additions to help unfamiliar readers understand the relationships within the book. However, the variety and creativity of this magical world are sure to please fantasy readers. 2005, Orchard Books/Scholastic, Ages 12 up.

School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-Charlie Bone is off on another action-packed adventure in this recording of Jenny Nimmo's fourth book (Orchard Books, 2005) in the Children of the Red King series. Listeners will need to be familiar with the previous books in the series in order to follow the extended cast of characters and their endowments-magical gifts that are bestowed upon descendents of the Red King-or they will become lost in the quickly moving plot. Charlie begins his second year at Bloor Academy with a bang, receiving detention his very first morning back at school. A literally magnetic new student, a mystical white horse, an ethereal woman with a gift for plants, and young Billy Raven, who can talk to animals, each play a substantial part while Charlie is swept up into a mystery revolving around the Castle of Mirrors during his ongoing search for his missing father. Subtle humor brings a lighter touch into the convoluted and shifting loyalties among the students and instructors at Bloor. Actor Simon Russell Beale reads with aplomb and grace, giving each character, whether man or beast, a distinct voice that makes the many players come to life. A good purchase for both school and public libraries where the series is popular.-Charli Osborne, Oxford Public Library, MI Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    An Exciting Thriller

This masterpiece is an exciting thriller for people who enjoy fantasy. I recommend this book because of the way the characters react to certain things and the way they use their endowments to solve their problems and find what's best for themselves and their friends.

Charlie Bone¿s friend, Billy Raven, finally gets adopted. Charlie is happy, but thinks that it is too good to be true. He finds pictures of Billy¿s foster parents, and finds out that Billy¿s parents doesn¿t like kids, and that he will be living in the Passing House. Charlie soon finds out that Billy¿s life is in danger, and that it is up to him to get Billy to the Castles of Mirrors, where Charlie hopes to find his father. Olivia Vertigo finds out that she has an endowment as well, but will she accept it, and what will it be? It is up to Charlie and his friends to stop Bloor¿s evils plan, and free Billy from the Bloor¿s clutches. This book is good for anyone, but you have to read the three books in the series. I like this book the best out of the whole series, because the non- stop wondering if Charlie will find his father, and there is a lot of action. This series is sort of like the Harry Potter series, so if you liked Harry Potter, you would like this series.

    Student Review

This book is outstanding! It had a catchy beginning and a plot so full that it made me want to keep reading. The main characters are Charlie Bone and Billy Raven. Manfred is now a teaching assistant and Charlie has to do lines for talking in the hallway. Billy gets adopted and is is locked up by a force field inside the Passing House. He signs an oath so he can't tell anybody about what happens inside the Passing House, or else. He runs away with the help of the Flames. Charlie and Billy then find out the history of the Castle of Mirrors. This is a must read!

This was the best in the series so far!

This was so good I stayed up all night reading it. Even though this series is meant for younger kids, I still enjoyed it alot. This book could give Harry Potter a run for his money. I hope the next book is just as good!

    I Love Charlie Bones!!!

This series is enchanting, fun to read, fast paced and is an absolute must have in any collection of young adult literature (or even adult literature!!). I originally bought this book for my son and we read it together, both of us equally falling in love with the charectors -- so much so that we now have to buy the rest of the series!!!!

    College Book Worm

This first book in this series was actually sent by a book club for my younger brother. Him not being a big fantasy reader, and me being the biggest fantasy reader ever in my house, decided to read the book. I fell in love with the book and quickly got all the other books to the series. This fourth book was excellent, and kept me wanting to read more. I would highly reccomend this entire series to anyone young or old.

I love the Charlie Bone series. They are very much like Harry Potter and they have differences between them that makes both so good. I looking forward to read the next book. (and that 7th book of HArry Potter)

oh no...only one more left... the quintet of Charlie Bone

I love these books and I have to say that i'd prefer to read anyone of these books over and over instead of reading some of the other books available. jenny nimmo is magic and knows how to write a decent and brilliant story, and I hope the last book in the series, Charlie Bone and the Hidden King, is just as great as the other ones including the fourth
