Overview

The all-time classic cartoon Peanuts reaches out to a new audience of kids in the specially curated series of AMP! Comics for Kids.

Put me in, Coach!

The Peanuts gang is ready to play ball in this collection of baseball-themed cartoons. Some of the most popular Peanuts moments happen on the field and they're gathered here for a season full of enjoyment. As manager of the endlessly losing team, Charlie Brown soldiers on to keep his team's spirits up, while being constantly blown off the pitching mound in a clothes-exploding fashion. It doesn't help that his catcher is a musician by nature or that his shortstop is a dog. Not to mention that center-fielder Lucy can't keep her mouth shut long enough to know what's going on in the game! Put them all together and you get a game plan for laughs!

First published in 1950, the classic Peanuts strip now appears in more than 2,200 newspapers in 75 countries in 25 languages. Phrases such as "security blanket" and "good grief," which originated in the Peanuts world, are now part of the global vernacular, and images of Charles Schulz's classic characters---Charlie Brown kicking the football, Lucy leaning over Schroeder's piano---are now universally recognized.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"...this is a substantial collection for kids to enjoy." (Johanna Draper-Carlson, Comics Worth Reading)

"Get this fun book for yourself or introduce the humor of Charles Schulz’s work to a whole new generation." (Kathryn Franklin, San Francisco Book Review)

Children's Literature - Lisa Czirr
Charlie Brown and his friends take to the field in this baseball-themed collection from Schultz’s iconic “Peanuts” series. These comic strips are as funny and philosophical as ever, featuring various small plotlines throughout. Although the team has a perfect losing record, Charlie is determined to succeed as manager. Among the ordeals that he must face are his entire team quitting, a case of “little leaguer’s elbow,” and of course, the threat of rain. Characters shine in their familiar roles: Linus taking his blanket to second base, Lucy picking on Charlie, Schroeder quitting to play piano, Peppermint Patty attempting to help the team to victory, and even Snoopy getting in on the action. Despite the many bitter defeats, Charlie still keeps going, encouraging the team to play on. A small flip-book style baseball can be seen bouncing along the side of each page. The visually-appealing layout uses vibrant colors, as well as white and occasional colorful backgrounds. A section at the book’s end includes facts about both baseball and the “Peanuts” comics, along with a list of websites to explore. This collection is a definite home run that will appeal to readers of all ages. Reviewer: Lisa Czirr; Ages 7 up.

Gr 1–3—Charlie Brown and the gang are back in this collection of baseball-themed strips from the classic "Peanuts" comic. With a team that always loses, and teammates who have no confidence in their "Blockhead" captain, Charlie's in for a rough season. He's tossed off the mound by a fast hit, struck out at the plate, and berated by his friends. Fans of the Schultz characters will enjoy this full-color volume, and the sports theme makes it an easy introduction for readers who want to embrace the national pastime. Clean, American as apple pie fun.—Clair Segal, Horace Mann School, New York CityGrades 5-8
