Overview

Meet Charlie.

He's a ranch dog. Breakfast is his life, especially when bacon is involved. Charlie has dangly ears, floppy skin, and big fat paws. And he loves living in the country. That's because he works like a dog...fixing fences, gardening, and helping his family out on the range.

Yep, it's all work, all the time for Charlie the ranch dog. In fact, he's probably working right now...

Zzzzzzz....

A ranch dog's work is never done!

Come along as Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman, introduces us to her beloved short-legged pioneer dog named Charlie.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

This much ballyhooed picture book stars Charlie, a ranch dog who clearly has it all under control. For this mellow, short-legged pioneer dog, exceedingly lethargic is the default mode; unless, of course, the word "bacon" is uttered, even whispered. This endearing picture book by blogger/author Ree Drummond (Confessions of a Pioneer Woman) will be the subject of an upcoming online story-time.

Publishers Weekly
A droopy-eyed basset hound is the star of the first children's book from Drummond, best known for her Pioneer Woman blog and subsequent books. Perhaps the most self-deluded ranch dog since Hank the Cowdog, Charlie introduces himself and Suzie, the younger, more energetic dog on Drummond's ranch. While lazy Charlie contemplates chasing a cow out of the yard, Suzie gets the job done. As Charlie sniffs under the porch steps for interlopers and finds none, Suzie gives chase to a squirrel she's found in the same spot. Charlie seems unaware of the impish chipmunk that deGroat, with characteristic humor, sneaks into each spread. Her paintings drolly portray the discrepancy between reality and Charlie's perceptions of his day, during which eating ("I can't be expected to do all this work on an empty stomach") and napping ("I must have accidentally closed my eyes for a few seconds") are high priorities. Adult readers will recognize in Charlie's voice the understated humor that has made Drummond's blog so successful; kids should find it irresistible. Ages 4–8. (May)
Booklist
“DeGroat’s cozy illustrations picture a beguiling Charlie on a comfortable ranch with appealing accoutrement. An observant chipmunk adds an extra touch of humor, and a lasagna recipe is thrown in for good measure.”
Children's Literature
Charlie-the-Bassett-Hound lives on a ranch with his friend and helper, Suzie-the-Jack-Russell-Terrier. Where Charlie's ears almost drag the ground as he ambles about on his stubby legs, Suzie's ears sit high on her head as she bounces around on her short legs. Charlie's paws are big to support his weight and long body, but Suzie's paws are trim and give her more spring to her stride. Charlie forgives Suzie her flaws and tries to keep her out of trouble. Suzie can jump much better than Charlie, not to mention dig and run better. Charlie doesn't hold that against her either. Charlie means to get up early to help with the chores, but Suzie beats him to the punch. The story continues telling of Charlie being a bit late for all of his chores, which Suzie does for him. The thing Charlie does best is eat his breakfast, especially if there is bacon involved. But in the end, Charlie does save the day—or at least the garden—by chasing the cows out. Children may not understand the tongue-in-cheek tone to this story, but they will like the pictures and the grown-ups will get a chuckle while reading it. Reviewer: Sarah Maury Swan
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—Charlie, a lovable layabout basset hound, believes, "Work. . .is what I do best." His friend Suzie, a young terrier, has boundless energy and zips around the ranch chasing squirrels, rounding up cattle, and fetching baskets of vegetables. Despite his proclamations, Charlie's real penchant is for eating ("Breakfast is my life") and napping ("Huh? What'd I miss? Oh. I must have accidentally closed my eyes for a few seconds"). But he springs into action when he is needed most and chases Daisy the cow out of the garden with a loud, hound-dog howl. DeGroat's winsome illustrations capture Charlie's daily routines, including sniffing the porch steps and snoozing in the grass. The comic irony of the text will amuse readers, and Charlie's quirks will win many fans.—Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada
Kirkus Reviews
Charlie, a long-eared, nap-loving basset hound, provides a highly filtered view of his life on the ranch. As he tells it, he and his sidekick, Suzie, are in charge. His bouncy, short-eared friend seems to be some sort of a terrier—all energy—and is always a few steps ahead of her buddy. Charlie, well, he is a basset hound, perpetually in search of the next meal and a quiet place to sleep. He has to keep the cows in their places, help Mama with the garden, catch fish and, of course, sniff the steps. Like Gloria, ofOffice Buckle and Gloriafame, Charlie's perceptions are quite different from reality. His down-home dialogue coupled with expressive watercolors give readers not-so-subtle clues about the personality of the dogs involved. They see Suzie running and herding the cattle, lugging baskets of vegetables and generally keeping the ranch in shape while Charlie rests his eyes and sleeps. But one day Charlie finds himself without his sidekick and actually proves himself to bea valuable farmhand. Young readers will chuckle at the unabashed, obvious humor and will especially enjoy finding the hidden, unnamed chipmunk buddy on every page. Rather bafflingly, Drummond, mostly known for her Pioneer Woman blog, provides an unexpected recipe for lasagna as backmatter. This incongruity aside, Charlie's tale is an agreeable if ephemeral one.(Picture book. 2-6)

    Has humor, love, and heart

In this utterly fantastic, adorable story, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Pioneer Woman Cooks, enters the world of children's fiction with a bang! You can tell that Ms. Drummond is writing about a subject she truly loves - her dog Charlie; and will remind all readers of their own beloved 'friend' who stands by their side, loves to 'nap' as frequently as possible, and eats a great deal of bacon. You see, Charlie is a basset hound who works very, very hard on his family's ranch. This loveable guy works side by side with his best friend Suzie. Suzie is a dog who is a bundle of high energy; she rarely, if ever, sits down and takes a rest. While Charlie, on the other hand, likes to pace himself. On the ranch, they wake up very early every day to begin work. Really early - as in, the sun hasn't even come up yet. Poor Charlie gets up slowly and makes sure to head outside to begin the day. He fills his hours with many things, such as protecting the yard from Daisy the Cow, as well as helping Mom with the gardening. He also patrols the porch to make sure there are no critters under there waiting for their chance to come inside and create havoc in the house. Charlie tries his best to teach Suzie how to do all these things, while still getting in a few naps, and heading to his bowl in order to enjoy as much bacon as humanly possible. After all, you have to have strength in order to get through the long, hard ranch days. The illustrations in this book are hysterical! The way Charlie snoozes while Suzie jumps fences, works the garden, and plays ALL day long, fills every page with fun and laughter. And, with a powerful ending that shows why Charlie is extremely necessary when he saves the day, makes this a book that should be on the shelf in every child's room. You will even look down at your own "hard-working" friend as he snores peacefully, and run out to the store to buy him as many treats as possible. Quill Says: A fantastic example of pure humor, love, and heart. Hopefully this duo will get together on far more projects, because the world is in dire need of excellent children's books such as this one. And it would be great to see Charlie again!

    Love Charlie!

Meet Charlie, the pioneer ranch dog. Charlie is the beloved pet of Ree Drummond, author of the the hugely popular blog, The Pioneer Woman. In this amusing story, Charlie narrates a typical day at the ranch with his sidekick and fellow canine, Suzie. Apparently, Suzie is in need of much guidance about what needs to be done on a ranch and Charlie's work is never done between ranching, protecting and teaching Suzie. The reality is Charlie doesn't do much but sleep and eat (especially bacon!), and Suzie does most of the work. But in Charlie's own mind he is ever busy protecting the ranch and getting things done. The story is hilarious. Drummond's humor is very witty and dry, it kind of sneaks up on you. Kids will enjoy the funny illustrations of Charlie, Suzie and life on the ranch. The pictures are part of the humor; the text may say Charlie is busy getting up very early to start his hard work, but the picture has Charlie lounging in his dog bed. Kids will love being "in" on the joke; Charlie really only does a whole lot of napping and eating, not so much hard work. This would make a very entertaining read-aloud. See if your readers notice the adorable chipmunk that is always hanging around Charlie, even though Charlie is very busy chasing the critters away!

    Leaves something to be desired

The illustrations are beautiful! However, the storyline is lacking. Charlie sleeps a lot and Suzie is energetic and playful. The end. I was hoping for a little more substance from the author as her blog is pretty well written and humorous, yet down to earth. I would have preferred a little bit of an adventure rather than a seemingly lazy day. It's her first children's book though and it's always good to have room for improvement. Overall I did enjoy reading this book to my preschoolers!

    Spot on

I see some reviewers complained of the dog sleeping all the time, but if you've ever had a basset hound (which I do) it's a perfect representation of a basset day. I swear my dog sleeps 21 hours a day. He even stands like Charlie with a paw up. Cute story and pretty illustrations.
