Charred Heart (Heart of Fire #1) by Lizzy Ford
Charred Heart (Heart of Fire #1) by Lizzy Ford was a great beginning to a new series. We are introduced to Chace, who is a dragon shifter, and thought to be the last dragon. Chace believes that he was cursed and changed into a dragon (later finds out that he was wrong) All he wants is to be human again. He goes to and makes a deal with Mr. Nothing. Chace is to bring Mr. Nothing the last dragon hunter and Mr. Nothing would change Chace back to being human again.
Chace ends up saving Skylar at the shifter bar and then takes her back to his cabin. Skylar is confused by this dragon because he is not what she expected. Chace is not this monstrous beast he was made out to be. Once in the cabin, Skylar throws caution in the wind and gets down and dirty with the dragon shifter. Chace takes a little nibble at the back of her neck (and marks her as his) and she has the best night of her life.
All the while, Skylar keeps on having these dreams or visions about her mother telling her that she will have her own dragon one day and that she will know it when he comes and it is her job to protect the dragons. Skylar tells Chace she isn’t there to kill him but to bring him in to reeducate and assimilate him to the world. Chace puts things together and knows he needs to go with Skylar if he wants to find out anything about the missing shifters.
Before Skylar takes him to The Field for reprogramming, they talk about slayers and shifters. What they tell each other just doesn’t make sense to either of them. Chace tells Skylar he thinks that she has been brainwashed. Skylar is confused but drops him off at the Field. However she is getting very bad vibes about leaving him there.
Chace is taken to a room where they start to pump him full of something that will kill him. Meanwhile Skylar talks to Mason, fellow slayer, who also has sex with shifter and Skylar decides she needs to get Chace out of there. Skylar finds Chace and they get away. Skylar can’t believe that they were killing shifters.
In the end, Chace hands Skylar over to Mr. Nothing and Chace gets what he wanted (he thinks).
The story is well written and has several different events that take place; it keeps you on your toes and takes you on a wonderful ride that is very enjoyable. The book has several sensual, stimulating scenes that will have you fanning yourself.
Lizzy Ford has done a wonderful job at creating an interesting paranormal world with different types of shifters and magnificent magic. Once you start to read this book you will not want to put it down. The book draws you in and you just want to know what happens next.
I can’t wait to see where the story goes and really would like the next book. This is a definite must read if you are dragon lover and even if you aren’t, because by the end of the book, you will be one.

I will warn you now, this book if for Mature readers only!! It has very graphic sex scenes, staring early, in Chapter 3. I almost stopped reading, thinking this had to be an erotica book, and I do not read those. But, I didn’t stop, felt I had to read more, to give it a chance, and it had already had my curiosity after chapter one when learning a bit about Chace, who I liked right away. I guess what turned me off the book is that they jump into the sex instantly, I mean if they said 5 words I would be surprised, they didn’t know anything about each other. Now I do get that there was a supernatural attraction going on, but still would like to have seen some more story building before the big sex scene.
So give it a chance if you’re like me and do not care for explicit sex scenes. I was very happy that there is a great story here, where many erotica books lack, they are all about the sex. This one is not like that, which is good.
So once I was past the uncomfortable parts of the overdone sex scenes I really enjoyed the book and didn’t want to stop reading it. Chace is a great character; he’s a dragon shifter, which I have not read much about before. Skylar is a dragon slayer, and their attraction is instant. I can’t really say too much, or I will give away some good stuff.
I really liked learning about Skylar’s past along with her, as she didn’t have much memory, so we got to learn it all right along with her. The world-building was also great, I felt I was right there seeing it all first hand. Great writing for sure.
Overall I am giving this book 5 out of 5 stars, as I believe as a whole the book is great, and is a series I want to continue to read. I plan to get book 2 Charred Tears soon and read it. Will also post a review of it when I get it done.
So paranormal romance lovers come check out this series. It’s got the steam and shapeshifters too.

4.5 Stars - I don’t read fantasy/paranormal romance very often. When I read I like to be completely consumed by the world in the book and more often than not I can’t project myself entirely into the fantasy world. I was pleasantly surprised by Charred Heart, to the point where I know I’m going to go buy the next book in the series to keep reading this story. It took a few pages before I found myself being sucked into this book. However, by the time the story was well underway, I was hooked.
Lizzy Ford has been creative in the design of her characters, precisely molding them to be unique entities. Skylar felt whole as a character. She wasn’t just a warrior or a lost little girl. She was a natural combination of both and that made her incredibly relatable and loveable. Chace is an alpha through and through. He isn’t without his weaknesses though, as we learn right from the start. Lizzy Ford made sure we’d swoon for Chace by allowing us to see the pain lying beneath the surface, endearing him to us immediately.
This book was the perfect mixture of romance, mystery and suspense. The storyline ensnared me from the start and kept me guessing throughout the entire journey. Lizzy Ford expertly wove romance through the mystery, allowing it to enhance the storyline rather than overshadow it. The dialogue and inner thoughts of the characters were witty and fun, perfect for their youth and life experiences. Since this is part of a series, there is obviously no concrete wrap-up in this book, but the author did a great job at leaving us mostly satisfied while still begging for more. I can’t wait to get started on the second book so I can find out what happens next!

This was one of those books that once you start it, you can't put it down until it is finished. I read A LOT of paranormal/shifter books but I can safely say that I have only read maybe 1 or 2 other dragon shifter books. This made it a very nice change of pace for me. I LOVE Chace. He is definitely easy to fall for and I can see so much more to his story. Actually, I could easily see many other stories but that is the series lover in me talking. Skylar and Chase's romance was very fast paced but books like this are meant to be that way. That is why most of us love them so much. I look very much forward to seeing where this series takes us and I will be recommending this to everyone who loves a good paranormal/shifter romance book.
Modern day retelling of "Beauty and the Beast"
***Recommended for ages 18+ due to multiple, creative, detailed, steamy, sexy-time adult situations.***
For a thousand years, Chace has searched for a way to break the curse placed on him by a jilted lover. He’s a dragon shifter, one who can’t control when the magic will force him into a different form. He’s already lost everyone he ever cared about a few times over and doesn’t know how much longer he’s meant to suffer.
At his wit’s end, he makes a deal with a mysterious figure that offers him what he wants most – an end to his misery – in exchange for everything that’s his: His life, his power. His heart.
The next day, he meets Skylar, a modern day dragon slayer whose mission is to cage him – or kill him. Sexy, witty and brave, she is the yin to his yang, the woman destined to break the curse, balance his magic and make his broken heart whole.
Except it’s too late. Not only has he sealed his fate, but an innocent one-night-stand with Skylar has dragged her into the middle of a deal with the devil, one she won’t escape, if he can’t convince her that dragon shifters aren’t her enemies.

What a rush! I didn’t just feel like I was reading this novel, I felt like I was living this novel. Ford developed her world so intricately that it is seamless. Did I have a hard time putting it down? Did I ever! The book was over before I took a breath. Ford used the dialogue not only to develop the characters but also to further the storyline. It also makes everything seem so much more real and down to earth. This author has nailed the art of racy and hot without being crass. She gives you raw, wild scenes that add to the story rather than being there as a side-blip.
The main characters in this novel were phenomenal. It’s been quite a long while since I’ve been so captivated by a pair of characters and their interactions with one another. They were brilliant as individuals and absolutely perfect as the will-they-won’t-they couple. I enjoyed the supporting cast. Although some of the supporting cast was mysterious it added to their aura. Ford went the extra mile, ensuring that her characters were fully developed, well rounded individuals that you could relate to.
I’ve heard lots about this author but have somehow never picked one up until now. I definitely can’t wait to read more. This was a rush. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review.
The first book in the Heart of Fire series is a fascinating dragon tale.
Chase is a dragon shifter who was cursed a thousand years ago and now he is looking for way to end his suffering. He makes a deal with a mysterious figure not realizing the consequences of his decision. A modern day dragon slayer, Skylar is on a mission to cage him – or kill him, but she soon finds that things aren’t what they seem.
This fast paced and smooth flowing plot is brought to life with vivid images and strong enchanting characters that capture the reader’s imagination. There is lots of action and suspense that keep the reader on the edge of their seats as well as romance and humor.
The chemistry between Sklar and Chase consume the pages with lots of sizzling passion and the well written sex scenes scorch the reader. The author conveys the emotions and the passion with intense details that makes it easy for the reader to feel as if they are part of the story and the hero and heroine are easily related to.
The world the author has created is a fascinating paranormal world full of magic, shapeshifters, an intriguing enemy and surprises. Once I started reading I couldn’t put the book down. The only thing I found disappointing was that Skylar who seems to be this strong character refuses to accept what is right in front of her face, so I just want to smack her upside the head and say “what’s up with that?” But that just adds to the entertainment and I can’t wait to see how things turn out for this very stubborn couple.

I need more stars!!!! Charred Heart by Lizzy Ford is amazing. It completely sucked me in in the first paragraph and kept pulling me farther as it progressed. This series is destined to be one of her best. The writing is perfect, the story line is flawless. I absolutely love the idea that only the ancients know what is really going on. So many surprises. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.

Chase is a Dragon Shifter. Skylar is a Dragon Slayer. They are supposed to be enemies. Right? So why are they so attracted to each other? Why does Skylar keep having dreams that tell her that she needs to be protecting Chase? That he is her Dragon. Are they really dreams? Have the people that Skylar has been looking up to this whole time been lying to her? Chase seems to think that instead of rehabilitating the shifters the slayers are capturing that they are killing them. Skylar starts to wonder if that could be true as she thinks her dreams may not be dreams but memories.
Loved it!!! This was the first book that I have read by Lizzy and I LOVED it! I will definitely be reading more of her work!

Chace, who I want to call Chance all the time due to the second 'C' instead of an 'S', is a 1000 year old dragon shifter. He's able to control his changes, unless brought on emotionally, and lives his life trying to protect his fellow shifters. Tired of his mundane existence though, he strikes a bargain with a mysterious shifter named "Mr. Nothing", so aptly named because no one knows anything about him. Chace will once again be human but he has to bring Mr. Nothing a slayer named Skylar.
Skylar has never known anything but but being a slayer. With over a 1000 year history, slayers capture shifters for rehabilitation. Upon meeting Chace though, Skylar begins to question her profession and everything she thinks she knows about shifters.
Charred Heart is an interesting read. I don't think there's really anything in the book that really drew me in to read it from it's official synopsis but I can't really pass up a paranormal romance, and one that has dragons? That's pretty cool in my book.
Chace and Skylar are pretty likable characters. They have an easy banter between them and amazing chemistry overall.
The story though? I felt it was very predictable. It wasn't bad but I felt like there could have been more. I don't know what exactly, but it was at least enjoyable.

We have Chace a 1,000 year old Dragon Shifter who no longer wants to be what he is.
Chace had a curse placed on him which causes him to shift. Unlike his friends who are natural born shifters.
One of his best buds is Gunner he is a Panther shifter. Something is happening to the shifters they are all
disappearing and all Chace can think about is getting out of his curse. He is willing to make a deal with
Mr.Nothing as he is called who says he can life the curse that plagues Chace. So Chace decides to bargain
everything he owns to Mr.Nothing for the curse to be gone. Just who is Mr.Nothing? all Im going to give you is
he is a Nocturnal Being. But before this deal can happen Chace gets caught up with a Dragon-Slayer by the
name of Skylar. Skylar has been thrusted into a world of horrible humans / weird scientists although she has
no clue about this. Evidentally she and her fellow slayers have all been brainwashed. Skylar doesn’t figure this
out at first. All Skylar knows is she has vivid dreams of her mother speaking to her about dragons and
telling her that one day she would have her own. What does that mean? She can’t figure it out. She ends up
being held by Chace and wow they rock each others world. She is the first person to ever calm his magic.
Will Skylar ever get all her memories back? Can Chase stop the killing of his fellow shifters and will he want
to end his deal with Mr.Nothing? Skylar doesn’t know what she wants and Chace knows or at least he knew
before Skylar came into his life. Can they find a way to make THEM happen? And what happens to Gunnar
and the others? Skylar has been given to Mr.Nothing by Chace but all is not what it seems as Chace will soon
discover. Can he find his magic deep within himself to do what he should have done a thousand years ago?
Can he get to Skylar?
The surprises that come about are so mind boggling they pull you in so deep. Surprises Surprises !!!
This book just draws you in. There is a ton of HOT and SEXY but there is also action that keeps you glue’d
to the book. This was a first read for me by this author and I sure hope not the last ¿
Can’t wait for the next book in this series. If you love Shifters this is a fantastic read.

Holy hotness Dragon boy! This is another must read from Lizzy Ford. This book is hot and has kept me glued to its pages wanting to know how the explosive budding relationship of Chace and Skylar grows along with the self discovery that they both are going through. Not to mention who is tracking down the shapeshifter and why. I did not want this book to end. I can not wait for the next book to come out so that I can see what will happen.

Dragons and their mates, talk about heating up the story! This story did NOT disappoint! I enjoyed the push and pull of the two main characters as they started discovering what their chemistry together was. Chace and Skylar have only begun to develop their relationship outside of the intense physical pull they have.
The blend of them together feeling the connection they have, yet not understanding it either leaves so much room for more to develop between them in future books.
Just a few favorite quotes:
Skylar: "You have a magic cabin." There was both awe and confusion in her voice.
Skylar and Chase: "Why does this always end with you kidnapping me?" she complained. "Now is not a good time to piss me off."
Chase: "If I had it to do again, I probably wouldn't have made those last few major life decisions," he told the heavens with wryness.
Chase: "So you're essentially my father-in-law."
Chase: "... no dragon worth his fire ever, ever missed a pizza date with a beautiful woman."
Lizzy once again has started a series that I can't wait to completely finish!
