Overview

In 1863 the South is desperate and dangerous. For two boys, alone, fleeing to Virginia from Arkansas and a murderer, it's a nightmare, but also the adventure of a lifetime. Joe Taylor is twelve, and he is not concerned with slavery and state's rights or any other baggage concerning the war. He only wants to return to his pa back home in the Shenandoah Valley. This cotton-top runt of a boy will let nothing stand in his way. Peter is a sixteen-year-old free black. He has lost his family to the war. He had promised his mother he would return to Pennsylvania, but he had also promised Joe's uncle he would look out for the high-strung boy. The latter commitment binds him to Joe and delivers him into the hell of the Confederate South. Peter has never been more terrified, but his faith in God sustains him. He will need that faith and any strength he can discover to help him with Joe. Together they struggle to be survivors and grow a bonding friendship as they confront the worst of men and the horrors of war.

Set in the deep south, Chase the Wild pigeons is a historically accurate novel that transports the reader back to the Civil War. The reader finds himself pulled into life on the Mississippi River, Southern culture and even Civil War era flora and fauna.

Mr.Gschwend paints a vivid picture of the effects of war on a nation, especially from the stand point of a child. Chase the Wild Pigeons does a fine job of illustrating racial tensions across the south with out being offensive, and tells a lovely story of two young men who have only each other to rely on.

Entwined into this entertaining story is adventure, one that makes it difficult to put down. I read this book into the wee hours of the night!

    I highly recommend this book!
