Overview

I was 23 when I was hired as an IRS Special Agent in 1972. Without a college degree and only a few years of experience as an auditor, I had quite a bit to learn. Fortunately, I was surrounded by brilliant, relentless and accomplished investigators and over time, I became one of them. During the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, I led some of the biggest investigations in the country.

"Chased: How I Caught Tax Cheats" is an inside account of never-before-told IRS investigations and the agents who took down sophisticated criminals. These cases sometimes began with a simple newspaper article, or a discerning employee who witnessed the crime. As I pursue the evidence, I take the reader as my witness: interviewing targets, following the money trail to offshore bank accounts, arresting wild suspects, and trying the cases in the courtroom where twelve jurors decide the defendants' fate. I even bring the reader undercover into the world of money laundering and drugs, where the lines between good and evil sometimes become blurred.

The characters involved in the investigations varied from Corporate Board Executives to Presidents of large corporations to Public Officials to attorneys to drug dealers. Although they were different in many ways, they all had one thing in common: greed that caught up to them.
