Overview

El Marini can't fit into her new life—the one that started when her dad left. If it weren't for her crush on Eric Callahan, life would have been truly unbearable. But when El's plan to lure him ends in disaster, only her love-hate relationship with the broody Dylan can help her understand how chasing boys has kept her from finding herself.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up

El Marini led a fabulous life, complete with everything money could buy. However, when this story begins, all of that is part of her past. She now lives in a small apartment with her mother and her sister. She misses her father, but he is absolutely not in the picture. She is resentful that her life has changed and that these circumstances are her reality. She is in a new school and she has made friends, tentatively, as she hopes to return to her old school soon. However, one of the things that helps her get through each day is the thought of Eric Callahan. He is beautiful, perfect, sporty, smart-and he has a girlfriend of the same caliber, Angelique. Dylan is a new student, like El, and they begin a love-hate relationship. El befriends Angelique, and it is Dylan who points out the flaws in the whole befriending-the-girl-who-is-dating-the-guy-you-like plan. El isn't ready to hear that yet, so she continues down the path she has chosen. There are disastrous results, but El uses all of the drama to learn about who she really is. There is great food for thought in this novel about friendships and what relationships mean, and the twist at the end should surprise readers. A solid choice that is sure to have wide appeal for chick-lit fans.-Emily Garrett Cassady, North Garland High School, Garland, TX

Kirkus Reviews
Life changed for El Marini when her father walked out. For starters, the family's finances have tanked, forcing her, her mother and her sister to relocate to a tiny apartment and El to withdraw from her tony private school-which means making a new start at Blair, an overcrowded public high school. El moves forward into her new life, making two new friends who introduce her to Blair-one of whom is Eric, Blair's stereotypical hot jock and El's instant crush. Unfortunately, Eric and the gorgeous Angelique are attached, and when El befriends Angelique, things get interesting. Blinded by Eric's hotness, El barely notices the brooding artist Dylan, but he, over time, helps El realize that people and situations are not always what they seem. El tells her own story in a present-tense narration, her analytical account punctuated by imagined conversations with her therapist, Leonard (she won't talk to him during their sessions). El's evolving relationship with Dylan helps the text move beyond a predictable crush story, providing depth and setting up a surprise-twist ending that underscores Dylan's message. (Fiction. YA)

This book was very fun to read! The only thing about it is that it left a little mystery about what will happen because i wanted to know will her and Dylan get together or her and Eric but it was a good book. i feel like a series might come up, well i hope so.

    Questions, Questions

There were way to many things left unanswered. I wish the book would have gone just a little bit longer to put your mind at rest. The book kinda just ended, it was like I turned the page and there was acknowledgements. I could, however, relate to the girl very well in how she built up this boy in her head, but I feel like she would have noticed how big of a jerk he was a little earlier. All around an okay book, just wish the author would hae tied up some of the loose ends.

    Just Plain Great!

"Remember your manners, listen to your teacher, and don't chase boys." A piece of advice Ariel (El, for short) had been told her first day of school. But she doesn't know if she can keep that promise anymore now that she is going to a crammed-full public high school filled with handsome jocks. El's family (which consists of herself, her older sister, and mother) has been down-sizing since her father left a year ago and she can't seem to forgive him. While keeping a mental list of questions to ask her therapist one day when she does finally want to talk to him, Ariel finds out that she might be wrong with the conclusions she was so quick to come up with.

Author Karen Tayleur's writing style is brilliant. The mixture of all the right moods are placed into this heart-pounding read. Some scenes are adorable, some are romantic, and others are somewhat depressing but captures the essence of the story. Most teens can relate to El's struggles but only a few understand it the way she does. I love this book and my jaw literally dropped at the end.

The characters were different, likeable, and realistic. If they were actual people, I'd definitely want them as my friends! There is also a wide variety of settings that I thank the author for coming up with. It was outside-the-box! Creative doesn't even begin to describe the storyline.

I enjoyed the book so much, I had to share more than half of it with my mother. And she loved it too! I got tears in my eyes and she was breathless. The emotion from this story will stay with you long after you have finish the final page, I guarantee. As my mom says, Chasing Boys is just plain "great".

    Chasing Boys

A very nice girl taken from her daily routine to live with her father and step mother while her own mother travels a bit. throughout the novel the main character just goes from humiliation to humiliation until she gets strong enough to move on with her life.
