Overview

Billie is as notorious for her beauty as she is for the hot yellow Ducati motorcycle she rides down L.A.'s meanest streets. Tough and talented, she does things her way. Until an unplanned pregnancy spins her life out of control. Her problem: Her lover Keith's divorce decree has been revoked, forcing him to choose between Billie and his dangerously manipulative wife, Carmen, along with their troubled and deceptive daughter, Destiny, a fifteen-year-old dancing on the edge of womanhood. Horrific things happen when Keith's daughter disappears in the company of low friends in dark places. And in chasing Destiny, Billie, Keith, and Carmen find their lives inextricably linked by a dangerous and seductive pursuit-at any speed, at any cost.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Revenge, deceit, familial loyalty, manipulation, jealousy: Dickey creates a dark Los Angeles world where there is little love and few heroes. The story is told alternatively by two very different women caught up in a tale of sex, speed, and power: Billie, who is known for her expertise and flair on a yellow Ducati motorcycle, and her lover's rebellious 15-year-old child, Destiny. While Olivia Goldsmith once held the title "Queen of revenge novels," Dickey bears his own vengeful crown in a tale full of skillful twists. Kimberly JaJuan handles the gritty and angry story well, moving easily among accents and between genders. Recommended for adult collections only.-Joyce Kessel, Villa Maria Coll., Buffalo, NY Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
L.A. free spirit's life takes a dangerous turn when she discovers she is pregnant-just as her lover decides to go back to his wife. Part-time bartender, aspiring singer and celebrated biker babe Billie (aka, Ducati, after the Italian motorcycle) is understandably crushed when Keith tells her, at Starbucks no less, that he is back with his estranged wife Carmen, a controlling harpy who has long been blackmailing him emotionally. Even after convincing him to revoke their impending divorce, so that they might once again live as a family with their teenaged daughter Destiny, Carmen is unsatisfied. Winning back the weak-willed Keith is not enough for the hypocritical lawyer, who had a lover of her own. She knows that Keith still loves Billie, so she is determined to make sure the other woman stays out of Keith's life-by any means necessary. Meanwhile, Carmen's baby-faced daughter is struggling with her own strong emotions. With a habit of sneaking out of her room after dark, Destiny uses a big fight with her mother as a pretext for hooking up with a group of slightly older kids she meets on the street. What happens that night is a gritty descent into a shocking teen underworld of violence, drugs and amateur porn. When Destiny does not come home, it is Billie who finds the traumatized runaway, and drags her back to her parents, if only temporarily. After that, Billie finds herself menaced by somebody bent on harming her and her unborn child, while Destiny goes off on a harrowing mission of revenge. Dickey's latest (Genevieve, 2005, etc.) delves into dark territory, with mixed results. While Billie is the kind of strong, sexy, heroine that Dickey's readers have come to love, it is hard tobelieve that a bright girl like Destiny-even with her family falling apart-could sink so far, so fast. A violent, sometimes farfetched look at the desperate lengths people will go to protect the things that matter most to them.

Meet the Author

Eric Jerome Dickey
Eric Jerome Dickey
Eric Jerome Dickey is a #1 Blackboard, Essence, and New York Times bestselling author with more than four million copies of his books in print.

Biography

Eric Jerome Dickey was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and attended the University of Memphis (the former Memphis State), where he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and earned a degree in computer system technology. In 1983, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in engineering.

After landing a job in the aerospace industry working as a software developer, Dickey's artistic talents surfaced, inspiring him to become an actor and a stand-up comedian. He soon began working the local and national comedy circuit. In the early 1990s the aerospace industry took a downward turn and Dickey found himself "downsized," but took this as an opportunity to embark on a writing career.

Having written several scripts for his personal comedy act, Dickey started writing poetry and short stories. He joined the IBWA (International Black Writers and Artists), participated in their development workshops, and became a recipient of the IBWA SEED Scholarship to attend UCLA's creative writing classes. In 1994 his first published short story, "Thirteen," appeared in the IBWA's River Crossing, Voices of the Diaspora: An Anthology of the International Black Experience. A second short story, "Days Gone By," was published in the magazine A Place to Enter.

With those successes behind him, Dickey decided to fine-tune some of his earlier work and developed a screenplay called Cappuccino. Cappuccino was directed and produced by Craig Ross Jr. and appeared in coffeehouses around the Los Angeles area. In February 1998, Cappuccino made its local debut during the Pan African Film Festival at the Magic Johnson Theater in Los Angeles and is currently on the film festival circuit.

Dickey's book-signing tours for Sister, Sister, Friends and Lovers, and Milk in My Coffee took him coast to coast and helped propel these novels to No. 1 on the Blackboard bestsellers List. His books have been featured in many publications, including Essence magazine and USA Today, and have appeared on the bestseller lists of The Los Angeles Times, Blackboard, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. Dickey has appeared as a guest on many television shows, including BET's Our Voices and CNN's Sunday Morning Live.

    Good Storyline.......but long winded

This book had a very good storyline....however I found myself nodding off at the elaborate and drawn out descriptions of everything. He needed to get to the point. It took me a month to read this book and I usually finish books in no more than two days.

The book really leaves you hanging in the end.

It was a very good book, in the beginning, the further you went through the book, the worse it had gotten, I honestly could have found more to do with my $15.00 other than buy this book. What happenend to The crazy ass wife, did she die? And, Why didn't Billie and Keith ever have another encounter, just leaves too much wondering for me.

I read this whole book :(

read this whole book simply because i really wanted to get into reading. i really wanted to give this book the benefit of the doubt and it was so stupidly detailed. I do not like this book and it was so dumb. There were so many times where I had to stop myself from daydreaming and drifting off to get into this book. I do not recommend this. I gave it to a friend and she had the same complaints. :( Hortible Horrible Read.

Now I understand why it was a 'bargain' book

This book is basically the novel version of the movie Crash. The characters somehow all interwine, yet some of the chracters lack substance. Save your money and either borrow it from a friend or your local library.

    Just finished it loved it.

Wasnt the absoulte best book i've read but I was very good. I would recommed this book to anybody. Billie is sexy and smart. The only thing I didnt like but kept me interested was the 'relationship' between her a raheem. He seems like a good man and she didnt care. And the fact she kept going back to keith even with his wife drama. Other than that. Awesome book, great read.

    Tasteful.... A Must Read...

For being the first book I read by this author I must say it was impressing. I found myself not being able to put it down. Damn¿ Billie went through a lot because of Carmen and her crazy family. This book has a little of everything suspenseful, dramatic etc. However, I feel a little like other readers the ending left me wanting more. I too hope there will be a follow up.

THE ENDING WAS NOT WHAT I EXPECTED

This was a very good book I read it in two days, but when I got to the ending there were a lot of questions that were not answered. This book kind of left me hanging at the end. It was very good but the ending had me a little upset. Hopefully there will be a part 2. Eric Jerome Dickey is a very talented author.

I am still trying to start/finish it!

I have had this book for a few months now, and I find myself trying to read it and then I put it down because it is to drawn out(boring). To much detail on how she rode her bike, etc. But I told myself I will not buy another book till I finished this one...may be a while!..Check out Trista Russell instead!

    FACING THE FACTS

This story started off great. And it continued to get better as I dulved deeper into the story. When I got to the end I felt like I was robbed. The ending was not what I expected. Chasing Destiny left me guessing about what really happened to Destiny. Did everyone find out that Destiny was the one behind Carmen's sister beat down? And if so was Carmen and Billie's relationship effected in any way? How did Destiny make right all the wrongs that she did. I know she had just cause for what she did, but two wrongs don't make a right. Maybe there will be a sequel, if so that will be great. But still a good read. Enjoy.

The characters were not very likeable

I was skeptical about checking this book out after reading the review awhile back but I decided to give it a try because I love Thieves Paradise and The other woman. It was not very many characters that were likeable at all.I know some may be suprise that Im saying this but I did not like Billie character very much either. She had good in her but she also appeared to be childish for her age and somewhat selfish as well. The character that was more likeable to me was Raheem.I know Dickey usually has alot of drama and suspense in his books but this was over the top.Hopefully his next book will be better. This one did not do it for me.

    Loved the Book

I liked the book. This was actually the first book by EDJ that I had ever read, but I was interested because I was told that he uses characters from some of his other books and adds them to new ones. What I really liked the most was that he metioned the songs that were popular at that time
