Description: This book seeks to describe the operative strategies and decision making in the perioperative period. It has very well drawn descriptions of the steps in the various operations and accompanying text.
Purpose: The purpose is to describe the thought process that goes into the various steps of an operation and then to describe the precise steps in that operation. These are excellent objectives and the book largely accomplished this purpose.
Audience: This book is written for practicing surgeons and residents who are training in surgery. The author is an authority in surgery and the book is well executed.
Features: This book covers a wide variety of procedures done in a general surgical practice. The basic structure is to describe the concepts that go into the preoperative and operative decision making. This is followed by a description of the various steps involved in the procedure. There are also descriptions of legacy techniques that are not currently practiced but of historical significance. The descriptions of the operations are accompanied by line drawings that are well executed, very clear, and of high quality. The logic and presentation of the book is it greatest strength. There is an excellent section on different methods of suturing the skin closed. There is also a section on types of retractors used in the operating room, a topic that is not presented in other books. It could have been expanded to cover all of the different kinds of retractors since it was limited to only several retractors. I thought that the concept section preceding the descriptions of the operations could have benefited from several tables presenting key studies that have influenced the choice of the operative procedure. However, these minor criticisms are greatly overweighed by the excellence of the presentation of the clinical procedures.
Assessment: This is an excellent book to convey the essence of operative procedures and decision making. It compares favorably with the other major books on operative technique. The book is a significant contribution to the literature and it improves on both its previous edition as well as the current selection of other books. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs a book describing the majority of procedures performed by general surgeons.
