Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leslie Rounds
One of the "How I Survived Middle School" series, this quick read delves into some of the issues of middle school life. The first person narrator is sixth grader Jenny McAfee, one of a tight-knit group of friends. Two members of her clique score high enough on a test to qualify for the statewide history bee, but one of them, Liza, has never done well on tests before. She is publicly accused of cheating by the popular girls in the school. With a lot of ambiguous evidence, even her friends begin to doubt her. When the truth comes out, Liza reveals a secret that explains her success on the test and a whole lot more. The story makes frequent references to the often dramatic social issues most middle-schoolers encounter on a daily basis. Character development is weak so the impact of ostracism and public humiliation are diminished in significance. The narrative is chatty and fast-paced, but superficial. The book includes a few self-scoring quizzes for readers, with topics such as "Are You Boy Crazy?" and "How Honest Are You?" Some middle-schoolers may enjoy this brief novel, but it seems more likely to appeal to younger readers who are aspiring toward middle school. Reviewer: Leslie Rounds\
