Editorial Reviews

Zom Zoms
This work lists approximately 66,000 painters and draftsmen, reproductions and photographs of whose works are in the Witt Library at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. Begun by Robert Witt and his wife in the 1890s as a private endeavor, the library now contains 1,700,000 reproductions from books, exhibition catalogs, and sales catalogs In an alphabetical-by-artist arrangement, the "Checklist" provides name, nationality, and dates for Western artists (i.e., from Europe, the Americas, Australia, Turkey, and South Africa) from the early thirteenth century to the present. "See "references lead to preferred forms of names, and there is a clearly written, two-page guide for users. First published in 1978, this new edition has a six-page bibliography of standard biographical dictionaries and indexes. Most of these are in English, and all are cited without annotation. Only strong art reference collections will have the majority of these works The strength of the "Checklist" is its inclusion of obscure nineteenth-and twentieth-century artists not found in "Thieme-Becker" and "Benezit". It will be useful in museum and research-level art libraries to verify names, dates, and nationalities of painters, but in view of its price, most general reference collections will not find it a "first purchase" title. Some libraries may find it an affordable alternative to "The Union List of Artist Names" (4v., G. K. Hall, 1994) which lists 100,000 artists and architects but which costs $495.
