They’ve become good friends, but after a tragic incident that changes Noa and her family forever, Noa’s beliefs about Palestinian and Israeli relations are put to the test. Shocking secrets are revealed that affect both Noa’s and Maha’s lives and test their blossoming relationship. "Checkpoints tells the complex and heart-breaking story of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the lives of real families. [A] story...that teenagers around the world will relate to and understand. If everyone were as courageous as Noa, peace might be possible!"—Dr. Katharine Henderson, executive vice president, Auburn Theological Seminary

"Checkpoints is a lovely book which gives the right impression of teenage life in Israel. The writer puts in a very accurate light the relationship between the life of youth on one hand and the moral dilemmas of young Israelis facing the Palestinian conflict. This book presents the tensions these teens face between wanting security and wanting to be able to live their lives."—Daniel Rubenstein

A terrific lesson on understanding both sides of a conflict

I bought Checkpoints for my friend's 14-year old daughter. I got so swept up in the story of Noa and her family that, before I knew it, I had finished reading the book. The author does such a good job of presenting both sides of the conflict that even young readers who don't follow the news will come away from the the book with a better understanding of both the Israeli and Palestinian perspectives on the long war and, I suspect, more compassion for everyone caught up in it. Reading the book made me wish I were still a classroom teacher because this is a novel that will surely stimulate lively discussion.

An inspiring and truly powerful novel

Marilyn Levy's Checkpoints is truly one of the most passionate, yet suspenseful books I have ever read. I am an eighth grader who is amazed at how such a delicate subject has been written about with such ease (it seems). I absolutely recommend this book to all teenagers!
