Dave's Not Here, Man

But America's favorite stoner comedian, Tommy Chong, is back and funnier than ever as he takes us on a nostalgic trip through his career with partner Richard "Cheech" Marin. Over the course of their decades-long partnership, Cheech and Chong performed to sold-out crowds across the country, made nine hit albums, starred in eight blockbuster movies, and created memorable and iconic characters that still resonate with fans today.

But the good life didn't just appear in a haze of smoke. It all started during the late 1960s in a strip club in the fragile heart of Vancouver's Chinatown, where Tommy was winding down his career as a Motown recording artist and starting an improv comedy troupe, and Cheech was a draft-dodging, pottery-throwing, underground music reviewer. Together they came to define the hippie-era counterculture, and theircelebrated movie debut, Up in Smoke, remains one of the highest-grossing Warner Bros. films ever.

In his very own unauthorized autobiography, New York Times bestselling author and pop culture hero Chong reveals his unique relationship with Cheech and recalls the inspiration for their most beloved bits. He introduces famous guest stars like Peter Sellers, John Belushi, Jimi Hendrix, Dan Aykroyd, John Lennon, Diana Ross, and Jack Nicholson, and examines the influences that had the greatest impact on his comedy -- from R&B musicians and Redd Foxx to Lenny Bruce and (of course) marijuana. Finally, with keen insight and utter candor, he explores the rift that has separated the legendary comedy team for more than twenty years.

From pot smoking to politics to the universe at large, Cheech & Chong: The Unauthorized Autobiography is the closestyou'll ever get to sitting in a van made entirely of marijuana, trading stories with an unlikely legend, and feeling...well...funny.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Comedian and author Chong (The I Chong: Meditations from the Joint), now 70, provides what he'd like us to believe is the straight dope on the popular stoner duo he created with Richard "Cheech" Marin in 1970. A popular touring musician before becoming a comedy hero of the hippie-era counterculture, Chong starts with his solo adventures in entertainment. Taking his time ambling through the '60s before catching up with Marin's addition to the act at decade's end, Chong laces crass writing with hyperbole, sex, name dropping and egomania. Often, Chong leans too hard on his act's legacy, straining to convince readers of their iconic status, and ignominiously blames Marin for the duo's post-heyday acrimony. Still, Chong provides worthy insight into the duo's most famous routines (including "Dave's Not Here"), their first record deal and several movies. Unfortunately, Chong leaves readers in a haze over the end of the partnership, and nowhere does he indicate anything regarding their recently announced reunion tour, their first in more than 25 years.

Meet the Author

Tommy Chong is a sixty-eight-year-old writer and director, best known as half of the legendary comedy duo Cheech and Chong. The pair found a wide audience through their stand-up routines, comedy albums, and popular films about the hippie, free-love, and (especially) drug culture movement. A father of five, Chong lives with his wife, Shelby, in California and performs with her at comedy clubs across the country. This is his first book.

    Cheech and Chong gone wrong.

There is a scene early on in the book where Tommy Chong is sitting in an airport. He hasn't seen Cheech Marin in a while, and is surprised to see him walking towards him carrying on an intense conversation with someone. Even though Cheech passes very close by without noticing him sitting there, Chong does not speak nor reach out to get his attention. It is story to illustrate how their relationship has deteriorated. But unfortunately, the story also serves as the lens through which the story of Cheech and Chong is told.

"Cheech and Chong: The Unauthorized Autobiography" is not really about Cheech and Chong at all. It is more of an autobiography of Tommy Chong, in which some obligatory stories about Cheech are told. Cheech does not even appear until many chapters into the book. And, unlike Chongs' excellent book "The I-Chong: Meditations From The Joint," this book with a colon in the title is not really funny.

I read this book expecting a humorous celebration of one of my all time, classic comedy teams. Not so much. Still an interesting story, but not the one that is advertised.
