Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mandy Cruz
The outrageously funny Cheech Marin has created a school bus driver in his image—which may be a frightening thought to those of us familiar with his movies. However, here he is not what we might expect. Rather, in this story, he is a dedicated bus driver who always gets his kids to school on time and never gets lost on field trips. Spanish-speaking children will appreciate the term of endearment (cheecharrones) by which Cheech calls "his" kids. Of course, the story is not all typical school day fare. Somehow, the bus ends up in a spooky tunnel as Cheech acquaints himself with the children in his charge. He pulls up to a stop where otherworldly children appear to be waiting for the bus. Following the cardinal rule of bus drivers—pick up every child—he opens the doors to allow them on the bus. Cheech soon realizes that the kids have disappeared; he shrugs it off and drives away. Alas, Cheech was mistaken, the ghost children are on the bus; no matter what antics he pulls to get them off, the ghosts don't budge. They take over the bus and fly it to their ghost school, where Cheech meets their grateful driver and befriends him. At times, the story feels rushed. The feeling of hurriedness is palpable. Just as Cheech wants to get the ghost kids off the bus, we want to get to the end of the book but when we do, we feel as though we have missed something. Orlando Ramirez does an amazing job of keeping kids' attention and bringing them back again and again while Miriam Fabiancic's translation is true to the original. Reviewer: Mandy Cruz

Gr 1-3–Cheech the bus driver and his “Cheecharones” embark on a supernatural adventure when he picks up students at a cemetery. When the kids disappear and haunt the bus, Cheech and the Cheecharones work together to get rid of the ghostly visitors. Their antics are not a bit scary, but are a lot of fun: wearing ghost costumes, singing unfriendly songs, and trying to throw the ghosts off the bus. Soon the real students realize how much fun it is to have the strangers around. Ramírez’s eye-catching illustrations bring the story to life with bright colors and characters full of animated expressions. An appealing storytime choice.–Ana Rodriguez, Tamarac Elementary School, FL
