Overview

It's only rock and roll...

In 1985 Tommy Womack and three other guys formed a band called Government Cheese, hitched their sled to the rock and roll dream, and screamed mush from the pits of their souls. They had nothing going for them save a vehement, greasy, turbo-psychotic vision of how things might turn out, and they went for it, deciding it was good to pursue an outlandish dream. Latch on to the wild dogs. Grab that whip and yee-the-hell-hah!

Along the way there will be great incidence of contusions, highway motel dog breath and bottle-ringed cocktail napkin blitherscribble. Things will move faster and faster. Everything they packed for the trip—relationships, standards, their future—will get tossed or bounced off somewhere, and all the while, they will know they could stop at any time, just by letting go of the dream.

Under no circumstances whatsoever will they let go of the dream.

“Funny and poignant. One of the best-written, most entertaining rock ’n’ roll diaries I’ve ever read.”—Bill Lloyd

“Tommy Womack did the impossible. He put down on paper what it feels like to dream about a band, what it feels like to actually start that band, what it feels like to play that first gig, what it feels like to get knocked down, what it feels like to soar without a net…what it actually feels like to BE IN A BAND.”—Steve Gorman, the Black Crowes

“A front-seat ride through the beer-drenched, puke-stenched rock underground of the New South. Insightful, honest, and brutally hilarious. It’s only ride and roll and he likes it. And so will you.”—Michael McCall, Nashville Scene

“Anyone with the dream of picking up a guitar and starting a rock band should check this out.”—Greg Martin, the Kentucky Headhunters

“Womack’s tale of rock and roll woe is the best book about life on the road ever written. (Sorry Jack Kerouac!)”—The Rev. Keith A. Gordon, author of the Alt.Culture.Guide

“A lyrical romp through the scene at the heart of Nashville's alt music underground's humble beginnings.”—Chuck Allen, The East Nashvillian

“I have read Cheese Chronicles 30 times. I read it over and again, because I like it, because it makes me laugh and makes me sad, and because it is as true as anything I've ever read about the hope and the hurt that comes with making music.”—Peter Cooper, The Tennessean

“Cheese Chronicles NAILS what it's like to be flying under the radar at 90 mph in a Ford Econoline van, fueled by youth, innocence, and dreams of rock 'n' roll splendor. It’s pedal-to-the-metal, my-ass-is-in-the gutter-but-I'm-staring-at-the-stars, as only Tommy Womack can tell it. Highly recommended.”—Marshall Chapman, recording artist and author

“It's like Merle said, ‘white line fever, a sickness born down deep within my soul.’ This is how it is with us, those who don't have much of a choice in the matter. We're gonna do it anyway. At least Tommy kept his sense of humor and wrote it down for you.”—Dan Baird, Homemade Sin, Georgia Satellites

“I have known Tommy for the better part of 30 years. He has NEVER stopped amazing me. He is truly one of the good guys and he always delivers the goods. Here's to 30 more Mr. Womack!!!!”—Warner Hodges, Jason & the Scorchers
