Fifth-grader Ronald "Cheesie" Mack's problems (like how to outsmart his evil older sister June, aka "Goon") may be ordinary, but in the hands of first-time author Cotler they're plenty entertaining. Cheesie's asides frequently break the fourth fall ("I mean, here you are reading this book, and you want to know what the bad news was, but there's this long sentence that you're reading right now that doesn't actually take all that long to read..."), and his playful use of language should go a long way to making readers feel like they've known Cheesie and his goofball friend, Georgie, for years. The main tension in the story arises from the discovery of an old, valuable penny that the boys find in Georgie's basement. But though the mystery of the coin is fun, the best reading comes with Cotler's narrative meandering, his many entertaining bit characters, and the intermittent trouble that Cheesie and Georgie must avoid. Cotler blatantly sets readers up for Cheesie's next adventure; after this installment, they'll be ready for it. Art not seen by PW. Ages 8–12. (Mar.)

Ronald "Cheesie" Mac is an eleven year old author with a winning book full of great stories, amazing trivia, sibling rivalry, and best friends forever. If this is the kind of story your readers are looking for (especially readers who ask for all the Wimpy Kid books by the color of their covers) recommend this book and you will make a reading buddy for life. Cheesie is planning on spending the summer at home with his best friend, Georgie, who can no longer afford the camp they've attended together for many summers. Then Georgie discovers a mysterious envelope in the basement of his house with a locket and an apparently old but ordinary penny, and the summer takes on new magic. The penny turns out to be rare and the boys are faced with a moral dilemma about whether to return the special coin to its owner or sell it for camp tuition. Cheesie and George discover that the owner of the envelope is a very elderly lady who lives in a decrepit old house and, in the process, they learn about honesty, empathy, and how appearances can be deceiving. The boys also learn the true value of friendship, and how telling the truth is not only its own reward, but can result in monetary gain, as well. All this happens while Cheesie refers readers to his excellent and awesome website (www.cheesiemack.com) which is chock full of fun facts, suggested activities, and solutions to riddles. Cheesie's book has illustrations, just like Wimpy Kid's, but these pictures are humorously tied to the text and add dimension to the story. If you haven't caught on yet, this book comes highly recommended because it is splendid and laugh-provoking (words that Cheesie would use in his vocabulary lists) and will undoubtedly have readers clamoring for the promised sequel.     So good - Highly Recommended - check it out for your kids

    I just loved this book and so did my 11 and 9 year old sons. It had all the fun like the Wimpy Kid books and so much more. Hope this is a series and another book comes out soon.

    Review: We thought Cheesie and Georgie were great characters but the book had a slow plot movement. Some of us had some difficulty getting into the book. Some of our favorite parts were when the boys were pranking Cheesie's sister, Goon (giving us some great ideas to try on our own siblings). We really enjoyed going to the website, and how well it was organized (Cheesie even responded to some of our comments). Overall the book was a good/okay book for our class to end the school year reading.
