Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The power and the beauty of this magnificent predator are captured in a well-researched text enhanced by breathtaking full-color photos. The author, a noted naturalist, brings his firsthand field experience to his writing, lending a you-are-there quality to the book. There is information about the origin and evolution of the animal as well as discussion about the cheetah's stalking technique, social groups, nurturing instincts and how cubs are introduced to the art of the hunt. Because the cheetah and his habitat are under human threat, there is much concern about the best way to protect these cats from extinction. Suggestions to meet this challenge are given. Whether this book is read word for word or simply appreciated for its stunning photography, it is a worthwhile addition to any collection. 2000, Voyageur Press, $16.95. Ages 8 to 14. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
KLIATT
This is a superbly illustrated introduction to cheetahs. The photographs alone make it a book hard to put down, but it is the text that ultimately invites the reader. The author is a freelance writer on wildlife and conservation whose work at the Mammal Research Institute at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, had the objective of reintroducing large cats, including cheetahs, into game reserves. The book's contents include the following chapters: Evolution, Form and Function; Predator and Prey; The Sometimes Social Cat; The Next Generation; The Imperiled Speedster; Racing Against Extinction; Distribution Map; Cheetah Facts; and Recommended Reading. There is also an index and a list of useful contacts about cheetah conservation. The entire book is infused with a concern for the survival of cheetahs, whose populations in Africa are at dangerously low numbers, and whose breeding in captivity has been generally unsuccessful. The cheetah remains the most difficult of large cats to breed in captivity. This is a lovely book, one that is hard to put down. WorldLife Library. (PO Box 338, Stillwater, MN 55082).
