Overview

Orphaned and raised by her uncle, the feisty sixteen-year-old Chelynne resolves to show her gratitude by marrying the man of her uncle's choice. Bracing herself for a graying, sickly noble, the last man she expects for a husband is the dashing future Earl of Bryant, Chadwick Hawthorne — suddenly, being a loving wife doesn't seem too hard a task. But he spurns her affection and remains her husband only in name, never in deed. Tormented by unfinished business from his past and an uprising threatening his land, Chad resolves to keep his distance from everyone, including his young wife.

Chelynne will go to any lengths to ignite her husband’s passion and save their marriage. But when she finally goes too far, the Earl must share his dark secret before Chelynne loses her reputation — or worse, her life.

Set during the English Restoration, Chelynne is filled with political conspiracies, family secrets, and shocking affairs, creating a deliciously complicated plot. Fans of Virgin River are going to love this historical novel written with Robyn's trademark zest for life.

    Highly recommended!

I love this book! I could not put it down, from the moment I started reading it I was in another time. It is very emotional at times and had me up till the early hours of the morning crying with her! I love the setting and the characters. This is a great read!

    Wholly frustrating...in a good way

This book is the reason I requested a Nook for Christmas. The tale was well-crafted and drawn out well enough to create an anxious tension for the reader regarding the two main characters. My only complaint is that justice was not as severe as I would have liked--the antagonists who fueled most of the drama and chaos got off way too easily for my liking. But I found myself cursing the number of pages to the payoff, and then cursing that there was no more story to read. A great introduction to Ms. Carr and her writing--I will certainly be seeking out her other works. Side note: While I was able to read past them, there were a number of typos the copy editors should have caught. Someone see to it that they are properly flogged.

    What romance??

I could barely finish this book and found it a complete disappointment. The male lead was manipulative and disgusting.....waste of $.

Eh.. not great, good for the price though.

It was a fun while reading but not very memorable. The characters didn't really make you fall in love with them... Chelynne or Chad. I couldn't really identify with the heroine, especially after she hooked up with her supposed love's best friend, yuck. There is one really worthy cry part though. It just wrapped up a little too quickly for me, felt rushed.

    I loved this book

From the moment I picked this book up I was sucked into the world Robyn Carr made. I fell in love with the people in the book and never wanted to put it down and never wanted it to end I wanted to find out what would happen next in there life. Such a good book if you haven't read Robyn before she never lets you down she takes you away and puts you in the worlds she has created.

    Suprisingly goof

I did not care at all for the female lead, even for the times she was too submissive. But the story was suprisingly engaging! Too verbose and over the top at times, but enjoyable. I agree with the reader that said justice not properly served and then wrapped up too quickly.

    Long and dull

I have enjoyed Carr's utopian Virgin River books, and expected an interesting look at another era. Overly long and redundant, neither main character had particular appeal. With effort I finished the novel, but will pass on any other historical romances she writes.

    Very good read.

Robyn Carr's first book. I am a huge fan of her Virgin River series and had no idea that she had ever written historical's. It kind of annoyed me how naive the character seemed at times, but I enjoyed the story overall.

    Typical

As expected an easy, quick read and . . . . no great literature.
Most of it simply too predictable.
