About the Author

Gershon J. Shugar is the author of The Chemist’s Ready Reference Handbook, also published by McGraw-Hill, and professor emeritus of engineering technologies at Essex County College, Newark, New Jersey. In 1947, Dr. Shugar founded a chemical manufacturing business that became the largest exclusive pearlescent pigment manufacturing company in the United States. In 1968, he was appointed assistant professor of chemistry at Rutgers University, where he taught until his appointment at Essex County College.

Jack T. Ballinger, B.S, M.S., Ed.D., was a professor of chemistry and chemical technology at St. Louis Community College for 35 years, and is currently an adjunct faculty member with the National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, Illinois. He serves as the Education and Workforce Development Coordinator and presents courses on ethanol process operations and courses training new process operators and laboratory technicians.
