Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Nothing to do on a rainy day? How about some sneaky science?--science that is so much fun that you don't notice the learning sneaking in. This is a great book for the third to sixth grade child who is interested in finding out "why," but who also wants to have fun while doing it. Young scientists will make bread and paper mache, create an active volcano and a jar fire extinguisher, experiment with acids and alkalis in drawing pictures and writing secret messages, and look at the chemical aspects of mixing and separating substance. The book begins with some tips and rules for safely conducting the experiments as well as a list of materials required for all the projects. These pages also feature the warning that adult supervision is needed for activities with scissors or hot saucepans, appropriate since 2/3 of the projects suggest adult assistance. Each activity covers a two-page spread and features a list of needed materials, numbered steps to follow along with photos of each step, a box featuring an extension, alternative method, or added detail, and a section entitled "Why it Works." These "Why it Works" sections are written in easy language and are accompanied by diagrams showing exactly how the chemical reaction takes place. The book concludes with a two-page spread summing up the basic concepts learned and the page reference for the experiment that presented each concept. The book also includes an index. Part of the "Science Factory" series, this book would be a welcome addition to any school library. 2000, Copper Beach Books/The Millbrook Press, Ages 8 to 12, $21.90. Reviewer: Elizabeth Pabrinkis
