About the Author

Thomas M. Klapötke

Born in 1961, studied chemistry at TU Berlin and received his PhD in 1986 under the supervision of Hartmut Köpf. After his postdoctoral studies in Fredericton, New Brunswick with Jack Passmore he finished his habilitation at TU Berlin in 1990. From 1995 until 1997 Klapötke was Ramsay Professor of Chemistry at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Since 1997 he is Professor and holds the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry at LMU Munich. In 2009 Klapötke was appointed a permanent visiting Professor for Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry at the Center of Energetic Concepts Development (CECD) in the University of Maryland (UM), College Park. Klapötke is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (C.Sci., C.Chem. F.R.S.C., U.K.), a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Fluorine Division of the ACS, a member of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh), a Life Member of the International Pyrotechnics Society (IPS), a Life Member of the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA, USA) and was appointed a Honorary Fellow of the Indian High Energy Materials Society (HEMSI) in 2011. Most of Klapötke’s scientific collaborations are between LMU and the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) in Aberdeen, MD and the US Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) in Picatinny, NJ. Klapötke also collaborates with the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) in Champaign, IL and several industrial partners in Germany and the USA. From 2011 - 2012 Klapötke was a Technical Team Member of NATO’s Munitions Related Contamination team (AVT-197). He is executive editor of Zeitschrift für Anorganische and Allgemeine Chemie (ZAAC, Wiley), the subject Editor in the area of explosives synthesis of the Central European Journal of Energetic Materials (CEJEM) and an editorial board member of Propellants, Explosives and Pyrotechnics (PEP), Journal of Energetic Materials and the International Journal of Energetic Materials and Chemical Propulsion (IJEMCP). Klapötke has published over 600 scientific papers in international peer reviewed journals, 30 book chapters, more than 10 books and holds numerous patents.
