Placing a greater emphasis on research, this edition is more tightly integrated with MasteringChemistry, the leading online homework, tutorial, and assessment program resulting in an unparalleled teaching and learning package that personalizes learning and coaches students toward understanding and mastery of tough chemistry topics.

This program presents a better teaching and learning experience—for you and your students. It provides:

  • Superior support beyond the classroom with MasteringChemistry: Students benefit from personalized, interactive learning through MasteringChemistry’s self-paced tutorials that guide them through the text’s most challenging topics; provide immediate, specific feedback; and keep students engaged and on track.
  • Enhanced learning from a dynamic author team of leading researchers and award-winning professors: Each member of this well-respected author team brings their expertise in a wide range of areas to the pages of this popular text. All authors have been active researchers and have taught general chemistry for many years.
  • Improved conceptual understanding through stepped up, relevant pedagogy: Students get numerous opportunities to test their knowledge through Give It Some Thought (GIST) exercises, Go Figure questions, and A Closer Look essays, now integrated with clicker questions and in MasteringChemistry.
  • Invaluable aids that ensure problem-solving success: By using a consistent process, a unique Analyze/Plan/Solve/Check format, dual-column problem-solving approach in certain areas, a new practice exercise following each worked example, and the Strategies in Chemistry feature, students are placed on the right path from the very start to excel at problem solving and comprehension.
  • Clarity through visualization from a variety of perspectives, including macroscopic, microscopic, and symbolic: Included are Visualizing Concepts exercises, with models, graphs, and other visual materials; sample exercises with molecular illustrations; and conceptual questions in the end-of-chapter questions.

As a chemistry major in University of Nevada, Reno, I have taken a course from Dr. LeMay (one of the author) - he is a fabulous teacher as much as he is an author. I used his book in high school AP chemistry course, which prepared me well for the undergraduate level first year chemistry class. We used a different textbook for that course (Chemical Principles by Zumdahl), which was definitely not as good as Brown-LeMay-Bursten. For high school AP chemistry or 1st year college chemistry, I would recommend this book in a heartbeat. It is an indespensible tool for grasping the basic concepts of chemistry. It is also a good reference to keep around for those who wish to dive into 'deeper' chemistry.

I WAS LIED TO AND CHARGED FOR THE BUY OUT FEE! When it came time to return my rental book, I followed all instructions and I had it dropped off at the nearest UPS location a week prior to the deadline. I received an email a couple weeks later stating that i was charged for an extension fee of 15$. When I attempted to track the book all it said was that the label was made, it was never scanned anywhere by the UPS. I went back to the UPS location, they looked for the package and weren't able to find it. I called customer service explaining to them the situation that the book was lost in transit and the representative LIED TO ME! she reassured me that I was NOT going to get charged the buy out fee and that she was going to refer my case to the upper management to take care of it. She told me to expect a confirmation email within 48 hours. Of course, i never received an email and when i called back to confirm the current representative said that she does not see anything about my case being referred to upper management and she doesn't see anything about attempting to resolve the buy out situation. All she sees under my order number from the previous representative was that I called regarding the extension fee I was charged. I was charged with a buy out fee of 100$. I have done everything to try and find the book and overall I HATE barnes and noble with a passion, I HATE the customer service representatives EVEN MORE! THEY ARE LIARS AND HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT!

Although it is described and priced as a "comprehensive media package", Barnes and Noble sells only the textbook. There is no media package and no access code. Both must be purchased separately from Prentice Hall. Customer service at B&N will not reimburse for their advertising error.

Explains everything, gives great practice problems that are included for almost every type of question with variability. Great to review with. Includes a list in the front for chapters and sections included in AP cirriculum, have not used cd yet for virtual labs. Includes answers for some problems in back of book, which is helpful in reviewing material. GREAT BOOK!

I'm currently taking chemistry in college and the book we're using is terrible. THIS book, however, has saved my life. It explains things in an orderly fashion, it doesn't jump around, it goes straight to the point, the examples are great, and it actually makes chemistry fun to learn. I highly recommend this book to AP students in high school and to undergradutes in college if they want to do well in their chem.

I really recomend this book for first year chemistry. I am using it to study for the AP Chem and it is very useful. I sugest buying the lecture notes while your at it.

Some textbooks have lucid explainations, despite the fact that they are from the 50s with paper that is already yellowing. Others are beautiful, clear, concise, with computer generated images and colors, but lack that beauty in the text itself. This book --you guessed it-- has both. It is excellently written, with apt metaphors introducing difficult concepts, conversational style in general, and interesting examples that bring the world of chemistry home. The new 8th edition is also a well-designed text, with clean and crips images, sharp colors (and a variety of them as well) that stand out, lists of critical information, and worked-out problems that make reading it a joy. The CD contains movies of experiments that illustrate what the book is talking about, and the website offers further resources: so I suggest you get it new, or at least with the CD and key. This is not just my opinion, but nearly the entire summer '01 chem class (~60 persons) at CUNY BC agrees.

Textbook was very hard to follow and understand. From a college student's perspective, this book didn't clearly identify and explain the formulas and applications that were used in class. If you are required to purchase this book for class be prepared to search for an additional book for help. I needed this class to fill a requirement for my major. Chemistry isn't my major and this book was required for a 200 level class. I have a 4.0 gpa and this book was hard to follow.

This book is hard to understand.I use it as a junior in high school, and some of the problems they give, there are no examples or explanations for. The main reason you have a textbook for class is so that you can refer back to this when you cannot understand your teacher. I think if you have this book, you will need an additional review book on he side.
