Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Norman L. Meyer, MD, PhD (University of Tennessee at Memphis College of Medicine)
Description: With this fifth edition classic text the editor attempts to retain the character of the first edition published 39 years ago with emphasis on clinical applicability. Along these lines, he has shortened the current volume from the previous 78 chapters to 56 to eliminate subjects with limited clinical relevance.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a source of extensive and current knowledge about common medical complications of pregnancy in addition to uncommon but important complications encountered in medical practice. Since many topics covered in this volume are not addressed in similar works, this book is a unique reference. Since the editor has assembled a diverse group of authorities who are experts on a wide range of common and uncommon pregnancy complications, the objectives are well met.
Audience: The editor targets a vast audience of obstetricians, perinatologists, internists, and family physicians who render medical care to pregnant women. These target groups should find this to be a valuable reference edition. To effect these ends, the editor has assembled nationally and internationally known contributors who assimilate a wide range of knowledge.
Features: In addition to the common complications of pregnancy, the contributors to this edition address many uncommon conditions that are encountered in pregnancies. Chapters devoted to such topics as ethics and domestic violence are not usually found in similar reference works. Medical complications are well covered; and subjects such as headache, dental disease, ocular conditions, and ENT disorders give this volume a unique place among reference works.
Assessment: This is an up-to-date reference work which is a comprehensive review of common and uncommon conditions complicating pregnancy. The editor has assembled a number of authorities who provide current information on a vast range of subjects. Although other reference works are available, this contemporary volume contains coverage of subjects not typically found.
