Overview

Hannah Swensen and her bakery, The Cookie Jar, bask in the glow of Hollywood glamour when Main Street becomes a movie set. And although tensions simmer as the cameras roll, no one expects the action to turn deadly - until it's too late...

There’s no such thing as privacy in Lake Eden, but Hannah never thought things would go this far. Everyone has been telling her what to do ever since she got not one but two marriage proposals. Movie mania soon shoves Hannah’s marriage dilemma into the background and even gives her cat a shot at stardom. The Cookie Jar serves as snack central with Main Street rented out for the week. She stirs lots of fresh gossip, whipping up treats for cast and crew, including demanding director Dean Lawrence’s favorite - cherry cheesecake.

Everything’s on schedule until Dean demonstrates a suicide scene with a prop gun that turns out to be all too real. As filming continues, Hannah sifts through the clues, hoping against hope that the person responsible for Dean’s death is half-baked enough to have made a mistake. When it happens, Hannah intends be there - ready to rewrite a killer’s lethal script with the kind of quirky ending that can only happen in Lake Eden...

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Joanne Fluke's mildly entertaining Cherry Cheesecake Murder: A Hannah Swenson Mystery with Recipes, the seventh entry in her cozy series set in quaint Lake Eden, Minn. (after 2005's Sugar Cookie Murder), finds our heroine up to her usual tricks: keeping her hometown happily fed with tasty cookies, chatting with her precocious niece and, of course, sleuthing. Hannah's two beaux, nerdy Norman and hunky Mike, willingly put up with her inability to choose between them, but readers are likely to weary of her by now tedious shilly-shallying. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Even the murder of its cranky director can't stop the filming of Crisis in Cherrywood or halt the snooping of Lake Eden's premier baker. Just when Hannah Swenson's decided to accept neither of the marriage proposals tendered at the end of Peach Cobbler Murder (2005)-turning down both sweet-tempered dentist Norman Rhoades and hot-blooded lawman Mike Kingston-another suitor turns up. Her old college classmate Ross Barton, now a Hollywood producer who thinks Lake Eden is just the spot to shoot his new movie, recruits Hannah's mom Delores as set designer, her younger sister Michelle as production assistant and her middle sister Andrea as an extra. He even casts Andrea's five-year-old, Tracey, to play heroine Lynne Larchmont as a child and presses Hannah's cat Moishe into service as her childhood pet. For Hannah he reserves the role of constant companion, escorting her to dinner, inviting her to view the dailies and letting her watch the filming-which gives her a front-row seat as Dean Lawrence, instructing leading man Anson Burke on how to use a prop pistol, shoots himself fatally instead. Since Mike has made it clear to Hannah that she must leave investigating to the professionals, she can't investigate, she can only snoop-much to the delight of Andrea, Norman and Lake Edenites everywhere. Fluke lavishes so much attention on the mechanics of location shooting that there's scant time for the murder, much less its solution.

    Great read...

Well I love the Swensen mystery series. They are all great and this one isn't disappointing. However, the only part of the story that turned me off was the one of Hannah rejecting her 2 proposals and feeling a little tingle with Ross (some guy she knew in college). I think Hannah should choose already. I used to the whole love triangle of the story, but now it's just getting old. However, the story was great. The plot took a little more to get to then the other books, but it was still worth it. It always amazes me how the murder suspect always turns out to be someone you don't even imagine. I love that Joanne Fluke always keeps the reader on their toes in regards to who committed the murder and why. Cannot wait to read Key Lime Pie Murder...

    Not My Favorite

I have read the series 1 through 8 and this one was my least favorite. I had difficulty keeping my interest enough to finish the book. I would highly recommend the other seven. All the recipes are a delight.

    Most fun series I've read.

This is the most fun series I have read. Started with the Key Lime Pie Murder, which was about number nine in the series, and I was "hooked." Had to start at the beginning; Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder. Light-hearted reading, and THE MOST DELICIOUS recipes are included.

    Hannah at it again

This is the 8th book in the series and this one was a little slow for me in some parts. It was nice to see a new man come into Hannah's life even for a brief time. Norman and Mike needed some jealous time on their hands. Hannah does it again and solves the murder of a womanizing director that every one seems to hate. Her old college friends Ross and Lynne come to town who involved in the movie that is being made in Lake Eden. Things start to go wrong and Hannah is there to pick up the pieces. Of course there are some great recipes as always in the book that seem to be great to try. Like I said earlier there are some slow parts and would have given it a 3.5 star rating.

    Fluke mysteries

Ms. Fluke writes well and keeps the reader interested throughout the book. After reading a few of them, you begin envisioning the characters. These are great books for those busy people who want some light entertainment yet not wanting to have a gooey romance novel. There is some depth to her books and you'll want to keep reading more and more about this town and its characters.
As a bonus, Ms. Fluke puts all of the recipes for the things baked in that particular story for you to try.

V-rooming Red & Spicy From Cover to End

Pick, pick, pick. Push, push, push. ¿Make your choice, Hannah!¿ All the characters were snapping down their two cents and hooting like owls, ¿who, who, who.¿ Hannah-the-carrot-top showed her colors and lassoed me into the story by the brilliant way she turned off the tension of making an immediate decision about Mike and Norm¿s dual marriage proposals. And their response to her ¿proposal¿ (in my book) was perfect, as was their response to Ross, Hannah¿s new love interest, before and after Ross garnered his rivals¿ friendship by giving them parts in the movie ¿scene.¿ The scene of needing an emergency entre for a brunch being catered for the movie cast and crew was handled with lip-smacking panache, and sugar-glued me into the story for keeps. After the planned entre had been literally ¿dumped,¿ Hannah stepped in with grandma Ingrid¿s fruit-pocket-french-toast-casserole, drawing out the prep process in drooling detail as Edna and several of the women pitched in around Hannah to save the brunch. That culinary drama gave a reading enthrallment factor on par with Goldilocks Catering¿s extensive in-plot kitchen machinations. I was intrigued by the complex (and juicy) weaving of the title confection (cherry cheesecake) into the story, prior to the prologue murder scene being plopped into the ongoing action. As I did in SUGAR COOKIE MURDER, I enjoyed the half-book build-up to the murder event. This allowed the development of the sweet and tangy scenes of the small town percolation to seat nicely before the character warmth went entertainingly sour as suspects were contemplated and death chilled the mood. Also, in this half-book murder-pop plot-timing, the clues have been brought in with a subtle, sneaky hand, and the reader has the option to lay back and enjoy the small town maneuvering instead of applying a magnifying glass to every scene in the early parts of the book. I did the lay back read first, then reviewed the first half of the book after finishing the read, to catch the clues which I had ignored while soaking up the purity of fun prior to the dark descent of human perversion.Genius has a way of weaving through even the lightest, most entertaining art. Yet, Fluke is smart enough to fuel her growing audience by keeping the Knapp light and bright, with dark and dreary used with a balsamic touch. This way she fully satisfies the cozy audience while giving a richer flavor for those whose magnifying glasses are humongous and heavy. Ugh. Where¿s my hydraulic crane? CHERRY CHEESECAKE MURDER is the first of Joanne Fluke¿s Hannah Swensen series to hit the New York Times Bestseller list. Congratulations, Joanne!!

    Hannah Rules!

Another hit in the Hannah Swensen Murder mystery series. I love the fact that a chunky, smart woman from a small town can keep a 'bad boy' (Mike) and a 'good boy' (Norman) on their toes trying to woo her. I certainly don't see any reason why Hannah should choose when she isn't commited to being in love with either one yet! This book is well written and the 'surprise' ending sure caught me off guard. I love the precocious niece and I wouldn't be surprised if she helps Hannah to catch bad guys some day soon. Buy this book and you will be in for a treat ( actually with the recipes included, several treats!).

    This is really bad!

This book reads more like a bad romance than a mystery. Hannah, in her passive-aggressive way, STILL refuses to choose between boyfriends Mike and Norman despite 2 marriage proposals. Most of the book deals with Hannah's 'I don't have to choose if I don't want to!' attitude. It's not cute, it's not funny it's old and it's tired. These two guys should dump her and move on. No guy deserves the treatment she dishes out. Next, Hannah's 6 year old niece, Tracy, is completely unbelieveable. No child anywhere says the things that she does in the way that she does. It was embarrasing to read those parts, because it's so phony. The most annoying thing, however, is the condescending tone the author portrays throughout the book. Words are constantly being defined for the reader, so much so that it detracts from the already weak story. There are no words here that need to be defined. This is an insult to the reader. The dialogue is ridiculous, the plot thin. Overall, this is a horrible story.

    delightful and charming amateur sleuth

The Cookie Jar is a thriving business in the small picturesque town of Lake Eden, Minnesota owned and operated by Hannah Swensen. Most women would love to have two men propose to her but Hannah feels claustrophobic as the whole town tries to help her to make a choice between Mike the deputy sheriff and Norman the dentist. She settles the problem by telling both men when she is ready to get married she would do the proposing. --- A third man becomes interested in Hannah when a movie company comes to town to film location shots for a Hollywood movie. Ross Burke, the writer-producer she was friendly with in college makes his interest in Hannah known. She likes him as much as she dislikes the director Dean Laurence a married egoistical womanizer who never gets mad, he just even with who ever crossed him. During rehearsal, the male star is ruining the shoot with his bad acting so Dean shows him how it should be done including using the prop gun in the suicide scene. The gun turns out to be real leaving Dean dead with a hole in his head. Everyone disliked the victim so Hannah decides to help Mike out by conducting her own investigation. --- As usual Joanne Fluke creates a delightful and charming amateur sleuth mystery that includes mouth watering recipes so the audience should read it on a full stomach. The protagonist is feisty and endearing and stays true to her convictions which make her an excellent role model. The mystery is well thought out with a very interesting red herring written into the plot so that readers deliberately think the wrong person is the killer. CHERRY CHEESECAKE MURDER is a very special treat. --- Harriet Klausner
