Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dianne Ochiltree
This addition to the "Rainbow Magic: Party Fairies" series revolves around eight-year-old girls Kirsty (the birthday girl) and Rachel (her best friend) and a magical helper known as Cherry the Cake Fairy. The story starts off with preparations for Kirsty's birthday party in the real world. Then, a magical invitation from Fairy Land beckons the girls to a second event, a surprise party for the King and Queen. Fairy magic enables the girls to attend both parties in the same day without problem—at least, there should have been no problem. Unfortunately, in Fairy Land they find themselves in the middle of a mess, with Jack Frost's goblin messing up the King and Queen's party cakes. The goblin even sneaks into the girls' world and tries to ruin Kirsty's cake! With the help of their Fairy Godmother, and Cherry the Cake Fairy's skills, all turns out fine—and delicious—in the end. A good selection for the step-into-reading crowd, the book has six short chapters, which will make readers feel especially grown-up as they cruise through the age-appropriate vocabulary and simple sentence structure. Lots of black-and-white spot art is sprinkled amongst the text. In short, beginning readers will enjoy practicing their skills with this cheery tale, filled with the stuff of little girls' dreams: parties, fancy cakes, fairyland characters, and all things sparkly, pink, or purple. A very affordable paperback for leisure reading, this book is the perfect choice for summer camp, beach day and vacation trip amusement. Reviewer: Dianne Ochiltree
