    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

A fairly good overview of chess openings

The problem with chess opening books is that if they cover enough depth to understand the theory, it takes 3 or 4 volumes. An overview, like this book, covers the very basics but does not even cover at times, what the goal of the opening is or should be.

I found it a good basic overview, but it would not be a book to learn any opening in depth enough to go to the chess board with confidence. I would recommend it -- as it will give you an idea of what openings may fit your your style, such as attacking, defense, counter-play, positional, etc. Then you can buy a more in-depth book to help you learn your favorite openings. Repertoire books cover 5 to 10 openings in more depth, so you can go to the board with confidence. But the disadvantage of such books is you only know 5 or 10 openings.

This is a good overview. I would recommended it and then move on to more complicated books. You cannot learn the major chess openings from only one book.
