Overview

This comprehensive, yet concise tool provides a direct approach to differential diagnosis for the 23 most common radiologic patterns of chest disease. CT and HRCT are used to confirm the pattern, show anatomic distribution of the disease, and make a specific diagnosis. Each pattern is introduced with radiographs followed by a series of questions, tables of differential diagnosis, and discussions of the most likely diseases to present with such a pattern. Discussions emphasize the importance of clinical correlation to narrow down the differential diagnosis.

OUTSTANDING FEATURES:

• Emphasizes plain film patterns, with CT, MR, and other important modalities included where appropriate.

• Begins each chapter with a quiz or illustrated case and provides the answers at the end of the chapter.

• Summarizes key points at the end of each chapter.

• Presents the pitfalls of plain film radiography, and indications for CT, HRCT, biopsy, and other procedures.

NEW FEATURES:

• Updates and expands coverage on lung cancer, tuberculosis, and AIDS.

• Revises discussions of perception/analysis of plain film observations.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Medical students and residents will find that this book is most helpful. I also believe that this is a good reference to aid practicing radiologists in refining their evaluation of the chest radiograph. The last sentence of the preface to the new edition reads, 'Chest radiology is a discipline that requires the mind of a detective and the ability to find answers to the unknown by careful review of the shadows.' Reed's book will certainly help make one a better detective."—Radiology, Jan. 2005
Kathleen A. Murray
This is the fourth edition of John Reed's well-known text of the pattern analysis approach to chest radiographs, revised from the 1991 edition. It is written as case studies with multiple examples and comprehensive discussions. The purpose is to provide comprehensive differential diagnosis for 23 of the most common radiographic patterns in chest disease. This remains a worthy objective, even in view of the newer imaging modalities, as the chest radiograph remains one of the most frequently ordered, cost effective, and useful tools to the physician. The text meets the author's objectives nicely. This is well designed for the intended audience of radiology residents and pulmonary fellows. It also includes a broader audience of residents in internal medicine, family medicine, and emergency medicine as well as practicing radiologists who wish to review patterns and differential diagnoses. The author is a credible authority on the subject, currently the chairman of the department of radiology at the University of Kentucky. The overall quality of radiographs in this edition is good, with multiple images shown in the discussion section of each chapter. The reference list is extensive (total 680) and has been updated. The table of contents is excellent. A table is given in each chapter, outlining the differential considerations for the finding. The overall appearance of the text is very nice, with an incredible amount of well-organized information summarized in a fairly small book. This is a unique text, offering an excellent learning tool, review, and reference text all in one volume. This is an excellent continuation and update of Dr. Reed's work. This edition is certainly justifiedand needed. The inclusion of AIDS and its pervasiveness throughout patterns and differential diagnoses is important. Newer modalities of MR and spiral CT are discussed and shown. At $89.95, it is a useful, thorough learning tool and good personal reference.
