Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Peg Glisson
There is something about sporty, fast cars: nine times out of ten eyes follow them as they go by. Capstone's Blazers series "Fast Cars" focuses on the cars' speed, history, design, and current models. Short simple sentences, fast facts, and stunning photos aligned with text all contribute to each brief overview. Introduced in 1953, the Corvette was a sports car made by a big American carmaker. Bullard matter-of-factly lists changes in aerodynamics, transmission, brakes, and wheels. Like others in the series, the book has a time line with photos, diagram, glossary, index, and suggested books and websites. Unfortunately, one website did not come up and in a second the pictures did not load. All three sites are aimed at adults, not young or struggling readers. The low lexile makes this accessible to young readers and the photos will appeal to all car enthusiasts. Reviewer: Peg Glisson

Vroom! Vroom! Vroom! Young English and Spanish readers will want to rev their engines when reading this "Blazers" bilingual series about automobiles. The Chevrolet Corvette is one of the cars featured in the series and bilingual readers will not be disappointed. The reader's initial interest is captured through the stunning photographs of the Corvette; however, it does not end with that. The simple and undaunting layout of English and Spanish text with bold glossary terms and boxed definitions assist young readers throughout the 29 pages. The translation from English to Spanish is above satisfactory. Included throughout the book are "fast facts," a diagram, plus a glossary, Internet sites, and index at the end. The Chevrolet Corvette history and its future are presented in the text. This series would be a positive addition to a school library media collection or bilingual classroom. Even reluctant readers will want to find out more about the prominence of specific cars in the automobile industry. Reviewer: Rosa Roberts
