Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
Directed by Rob Marshall Annie and adapted for film by Bill Condon Gods and Monsters, Chicago tells the tale of two ruthless female vaudeville performers -- one past her prime, the other aspiring to stardom -- who compete for notoriety while incarcerated on the city's famed Murderers Row for violently avenging romantic betrayals.
Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renée Zellweger tackle the lead roles of Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart, respectively, with commendable theatrical flair, bringing the seductive musical charm of Bob Fosse's Broadway hit based on the music of John Kander and Fred Ebb to life on the big screen and on this soundtrack. Featuring several songs from both leads, alongside performances from costars Richard Gere as the devilish lawyer Billy Flynn, who represents both women and Queen Latifah as conniving prison matron, Big Mama, the disc takes on a life of its own. Highlights include Zeta-Jones's smoldering rendition of "All That Jazz," Zellweger's breathy, torch-song take on "Nowadays," and Gere's enchanting "Razzle Dazzle." Talented character actor John C. Reilly -- who plays Roxie's unassuming and dimwitted hubby, Amos -- deserves kudos for his heartbreaking performance of "Mister Cellophane," as does Latifah for her sassy showstopper "When You're Good to Mama" and "Class," a comical duet with Zeta-Jones cut from the film. Adding a dash of contemporary flavor to this mesmerizing soundtrack are two songs inspired by the scandalous story: Latifah's female-affirming rap version of "Cell Block Tango He Had It Comin'," featuring Lil' Kim and Macy Gray, and Anastacia's power-pop ditty "Love Is a Crime." From start to finish, Chicago gives listeners the old razzle-dazzle -- and them some.

THE BEST CD THE WORD HAS EVER KNOW!!!!

CATHRINE ROCKED THE HOUSE IN ALL THAT JAZZ AND RENE PERFORMED LIKE SHE'D BEEN DOING THIS ALL HER LIFE. THE QUEEN WAS EXCELLENT IN HER DEBUT AS MAMA MORTON. THIS CD IS SO GOOD I WENT OUT AND BOUGHT THREE COPIES ALL FOR MYSELF.

    This is great!

Catherine Zeta-Jones shines as Velma while Rene Zelleweger is adequate as Roxie. Richard Gere performs exceptionally as Billy Flynn while Queen Latifah is Mama. Great vocals all around and a booming rendition of All That Jazz by CZJ. Rene kept this from 5 stars.

It's Stuck in my CD Player!

It's been stuck in my CD player (not literally) since I bought it in January, and that's a good thing! Catherine Zeta-Jones has the best voice, but all the other songs are equally well done. It's all that jazz and more!!

    Better than the original!

It's unbelievable but even though this version is sung by amateurs it is by far better than the broadway original recording. Contrary to other opinions, I have to say that this recording is MORE uplifting and upbeat than the broadway version. No one can sing "When You're Good To Mama" better than Queen Latifah. In my opinion the broadway production has too much "1920's twang" which I don't care for. A diehard musical fan would probably say that is exactly what makes it better, but it just doesn't resonate well in my ears and make me want to get up and sing like the movie version.

CHICAGO on Vallium? this Cast needs A Pick-me-up!

So sorry folks, but after hearing Mike Douglas's wife sing, if she should ever try again, please let it be in Sing,Sing, the Prison. And Zellwigger, also needs to pick up both the pace and the FEELING a few hundred rpm's. This cast is BLAND! The music is good, and true to the original stage work. If there is a high spot, it has to be Queen Latifa's "When you're good to Mama". Want a great version, buy either of the Broadway or London Cast albums. They are full of LIfe, Vitality and FEELING. Any other cast beats the movie cast hands down!!!! That's Hollywood's main problem when they do a Musical. THEY RUIN IT! Ruin it, by placing big current names in parts that the ACTORS should never be cast in. Come on, The Film cast must be on Vallium. So, BUY CHICAGO,THE Original CAST, with Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera, Jerry Orbach (Law & Order, F/X, the Fantastics), orthe Revival cast with, Bebe Neuworth(Frasier) and Ann Reinking, ames Naughton and Joel Grey. And then finally, The London cast with Ute Lemper. THESE ARE GREAT RECORDINGS you are sure to love even better than this prozac soundtrak version. That's where YOU ARE SURE TO FIND, "ALL THAT JAZZ!"

    And all that jazz

I personally thought that Chicago didnt deserve Best Picture...but the music was so awesome...my friend told me after the movie, "I don't think this is the kinda musical where you sing the music" but my boyfriend and I found ourselves singing the music days after the movie and as I lay in bed I played the music through my head. I loved practically all the songs. The ones Zellweger sang were the best personally. And I think personally that Zellweger has a very sweet voice which really suited the music. Well, I hope this has helped you, I'm not very good at writing this kinda stuff...but..."the name on everybodys lips is gonna be".........CHICAGO!

    John C. Reilly was memorable!

Loved the movie and the music: Was captivated, and a neat surprise was when John came on to sing "Mister Cellophane" with his marvelous voice, felt that I was right in the front row at the live theater.

    Razzle Dazzle!

I bought the soundtrack before I saw the movie, and I fell in love with the music. When I went to go see the movie I couldn't help but sing along. The songs on this album are really great. Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Richard Gere really out did themselves! I had no idea they could sing. However, what really shocked me was the fact that John C. Reilly could sing. After listening to the this soundtrack and seeing the movie. You can see why this has Oscar winner written all over it!

Chicago is a great soundtrack if you like music from the 20's of if you like swing or jazz.

The soundtrack for Chicago is great, it's great to dance to, or just to listen. It is one of my favorite cds and is worth the money, but as always I suggest that you listen to it befor you buy it, just incase you don't like it. I also suggest, that if you like the soundtrack, you should go see the movie. Just remember that there is a reason that it's rated PG13.

This cd has the best songs ever. The people who sing them are outstanding with their performances. The movie itself is amazing. If I could I would give this cd and movie 7,000 grammys.
