Overview

Chicago's South Shore has a mature, urban nature that disguises its evolution from marshland to farmland, and from suburb to city neighborhood. Located between Jackson Park and Seventy-ninth Street, and from Lake Michigan to Stony Island, the marshland of the 1800s was first settled by German and Scandinavian truck and flower farmers. Beginning in the 1890s, the Illinois Central Railroad Electric Line expanded into what was largely undeveloped farmland, setting the stage for one hundred years of development and ...

Beginning in the 1890s, the Illinois Central Railroad Electric Line expanded into what was largely undeveloped farmland, setting the stage for one hundred years of development and demographic change. From Hyde Park to Jeffery Manor and South Chicago, the pictures contained in Chicago's South Shore show many of the faces, places, and events that marked the evolution of the area. German, Swedish, Irish, and African-American families are just a fraction of the many groups who have called South Shore home. Today, largely through the redevelopment efforts of South Shore Bank, the neighborhood promises to build on its glorious past and

play a vital role in Chicago's future.

Meet the Author

Beginning in 1951, and for the following 20 years, Hugh Celander ran a family-owned photography business in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood, a vantage point from which he documented the lives and times of a changing city. From his restoration work on historic images, to his own efforts at documenting the area, these collected moments from the history of what was an early Chicago "suburb" appear frozen in time. Join Charles Celander as he guides this visual tour of his father's photographs illustrating the history of Chicago's South Shore.

IT WAS A LAND FAR FAR AWAY, A TIME LONG LONG AGO

I grew up 'around the corner' as we used to say from the Celander Studio. (79th and Colfax) It was a great place to grow up. This is the 4th copy that I'm ordering for friends that have seen my copy. It's full of memories. I hope that there will be a book 2. The more pictures I saw, the more I wanted to see.

Like walking around the old neighborhood!

I grew up in South Shore (73rd and Bennett) and the photos in this book brought back fond memories--Gordon's Pet Shop, Cunis Candies, the Vera Shop! It made me feel young again. Good history about the development of South Shore too!
