Nancy Mitchell Autio, R.N., is the co-author of Chicken Soup for the Christian Soul; Chicken Soup for the Christian Family Soul; Chicken Soup for the Surviving Soul and Chicken Soup for the Expectant Mother's Soul.

LeAnn Thieman has been a nurse for thirty-one years. Her book, This Must Be My Brother, chronicles her daring adventure to help rescue three hundred babies as Saigon was falling to the Communists. This story was featured in Chicken Soup for the Mother's Soul, and she has written stories for six other Chicken Soup books.

Biography

While Jack Canfield himself may not necessarily be a household name, it's very likely that you have heard of his famed Chicken Soup for the Soul series and nearly as likely that you have at least one of them sitting on your very own bookshelf! Having got his start as an inspirational speaker, Canfield's own story is nothing less than inspirational.

Jack Canfield had been traveling around delivering key note speeches and organizing workshops to help audiences build their self-esteem and maximize their potential when he had an in-flight brainstorm that changed his life. While flying home from a gig, Canfield realized that the very same advice he had been delivering during his in-person addresses could potentially form the basis of a book. Canfield used inspirational stories he'd gleaned over the years as the basis of his speeches, and he thought it would be a terrific idea to gather together 101 inspirational stories and anthologize them in a single volume. Upon returning home, Canfield approached friend and author Mark Victor Hansen about his concept. Hansen agreed it was a great idea, and the two men set about finding a publisher. Believe it or not, the mega-selling series was not an easy sell to publishers. "We were rejected by 123 publishers all told," Canfield told Shareguide.com. "The first time we went to New York, we visited with about a dozen publishers in a two day period with our agent, and nobody wanted it. They all said it was a stupid title, that nobody bought collections of short stories, that there was no edge -- no sex, no violence. Why would anyone read it?"

Canfield wisely practiced what he preached -- and persisted. Ultimately, he and Hansen sold the first Chicken Soup for the Soul book to a small press based in Deerfield Beach, Florida, called Health Communications. The rest, as they say, is history. There are currently 80 million copies of the Chicken Soup books in print, with subjects as varied as Chicken Soup For the Horse Lover's Soul and Chicken Soup For the Prisoner's Soul. Canfield and Hansen ranked as the top-selling authors of 1997 and are multiple New York Times bestsellers. Most important of all, the inspirational stories they have gathered in their many volumes have improved the lives of countless readers.

This year, expect to see Canfield's name gracing the covers of such titles as Chicken Soup For the Scrapbooker's Soul, Chicken Soup For the Mother and Son Soul, and Chicken Soup For the African American Woman's Soul. He and Hansen have also launched the all-new "Healthy Living" series and 8 titles in that series have already been released this year. There is also the fascinating You've GOT to Read This Book!, in which Canfield compiles personal accounts by 55 people each discussing a book that has changed his or her life. The most compelling of these may be the story of young entrepreneur Farrah Gray, who read Deepak Chopra's The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success at the age of 11 and made his first million dollars at the age of 14!

With no sign of slowing down, Canfield continues to be an inspiration to millions, who fortunately refused to give up when it seemed as though he would never even get his first book published. Good To Know

Canfield is the founder of two California based self-esteem programs, "Self-Esteem Seminars" in Santa Barbara and "The Foundation For Self Esteem" in Culver City.

Writing the first Chicken Soup book was a lot more daunting than Canfield expected. After the first three years of research, he and Mark Victor Hansen had only compiled 68 stories -- 33 tales shy of their goal of 101 stories.

Along with co-writing dozens of full-length books, Canfield also publishes a free biweekly newsletter called Success Strategies.

I got a C in composition. Nobody would have ever believed I would grow up to be a bestselling author."

I love to play Scrabble, poker and backgammon with my in-laws, nieces and nephews. We really get into it. I love to travel. Jack

After working many years in a large metropolitan hospital, with state of the art conveniences, my work as PM charge nurse in a small local convalescent hospital yielded many frustrations. Occasionally we lacked supplies or equipment and sometimes the food was less than desirable. The biggest problem was the lack of qualified help. Still, everyone working there had a genuine love for the patients, and did their best to care for them.

Alice, a tiny, alert elderly lady with bright blue, twinkling eyes was everyone's favorite. Her only living relative was her son Jack, a large, tough man. Tattoos covered his arms and a scraggly beard grew haphazardly on his chin. No matter how cold the weather was, he always wore a tank top shirt so the dragon and snake artwork could be admired by all. He wore faded jeans, so stiff with grime, they could have stood alone. His loud and gruff manner terrified most of the staff.

But this monstrous man loved his tiny mother. Everyday, he roared up to the hospital entrance on his old motorcycle, flung open the front door, and tromped down the hall to her room, his clacking boot heels loudly announcing his arrival. He visited at unpredictable hours so he could surprise anyone he suspected of not taking proper care of his mother. Yet, his gentleness with her amazed me.

I made friends with Jack, figuring I'd rather be a friend with a man like him, than an enemy. And I, like everyone else, truly loved his mother.

One particularly bad evening at the hospital, three aides called in sick, the food carts were late and cold, and one of the patients fell and broke his hip. Jack came in at suppertime, as usual, to help his mother with her meal. He stood gawking at me in the nurses' station as I busily tried to do the work of three nurses. Overwhelmed, and near tears, I avoided his stare.

After the patients were finally fed, bathed, and put to bed I sat at the desk and put my head down on my arms for a few moment's relaxation before the night shift arrived. Suddenly, the front door burst open. Startled, I thought, Oh no! Here comes Jack, checking up on us again! As he stomped to the desk, I looked up to see his burly hand gripping a pickle jar with a bit of colored yarn tied in a bow around the neck. And in the jar was the loveliest, long stemmed red rose I'd ever seen. Jack handed it to me and said, "I noticed what a bad time you were having tonight. This is for you, from me and my mother."

With that, he turned around, marched back out the door, and with a roar from his motorcycle, rode out into the darkness.
I've received many gifts and cards from many grateful patients and their families, but never one that touched me more than the red rose in the pickle jar given to me that night so long ago.

    This book will get you through nursing school

    I'm in college for nursing right now getting my BSN. Whenever I start to piss and moan about A&P or Chm, I grab this book and read a passage. I've actually made it a habit to read a story before each class. I've probably read this book four times by now! The only thing is that I wish they had more editions by now. But seriously, this book will get you through nursing school!

    What Really Happens in Nurses' Locker rooms?

    What happens in nurses' locker rooms? Forget what you see on the Soaps! There's a nation-wide shortage of nurses, and believe me, we feel it. So what goes on in those locker rooms? After we've worked overtime, short-staffed, maybe just narrowly missed being bitten by a surly drug-overdose patient? We let our hair down and tell WAR STORIES! We remind ourselves of just why we went into this profession in the first place, and why for the most part it warms our hearts still. That is what's so great about Chicken Soup For the Nurse's Soul. It feels like that sought-after moment when you can prop up your tired feet and let your hair down...with colleagues who understand. As an emergency room nurse for nearly thirty years, I found myself laughing and crying while reading the stories in this exceptional book. These are real. These are the hearts underneath those faded green scrubs, the weary smiles on the other side of that thermometer. And they should be heard. This book is the Buzz of my ER, and I will bet that sentiment will be spreading like wildfire and chicken pox! Much appreciation to Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Nancy Mitchell Autio, and LeAnn Thieman for presenting this very special gift to nurses everywhere.

    The essence of nursing!

    Hard times...read this book.

    It is an awesome book to read. I am a nursing student. I even read this when i was in high school. This is a wonderful book not only for nurse but also the patients that are going through a hard time.

    Given as a gift

    I have not read this book myself. I purchased it as a Christmas gift for my daughter who is a nurse.

    She started reading it right away and finds it difficult to put down. I think our medical professionals could use a bit of inspiration. There is also a Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul II. I plan on purchasing that one for her also.

    Great book for nurses

    At last, a wonderful book celebrating and honoring nurses. Each story is truly inspirational. This book highlights the special lives that nurses live as they touch the lives of others. What a nice tribute! This is now my second favorite inspirational book -- my first being 'Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Book of Wisdom' by Taro Gold. Giving these kind of inspirational gift books assures that your present lasts longer than candy and flowers and will boost the readers' self esteem! Every nurse I have known who has read these books has loved them!

    A Perfect Gift

    Every nurse can relate to the gamet of emotions portrayed in book. The short story format is perfect for the busy nurse to read. So the next time you want to remember that special nurse in your life or the one who helped you through a crises, give them a dose of their own special 'chicken soup'. It lasts longer than candy and flowers and will boost their self esteem like nothing else. Every nurse I have known in the 36 years I have been a nurse would love it!!!
