Overview

One of ten volumes in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Rejoice features percussion-based contemporary instrumentals by percussionist Jai Bunito Aeo and violinist/keyboardist Patrick Nelson. While Aeo and Nelson's interplay is engaging, particularly on "Free to Be" and "Rejuvenate," the songs' arrangements tend to lose some of the subtlety of their playing. Fortunately, for most of the album the arrangements are less busy, and Aeo and Nelson's lively style does a good job of fulfilling the imagery that titles such as "Rhythm World," "Beach in Monterey," and "Island Hop" suggest. The album also features a version of "Rejoice," as a track with Chicken Soup for the Soul creator Mark Victor Hansen reading an inspirational story. A thoughtfully-made album, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Rejoice is a well-done album of energizing music that works equally well as a part of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, or on its own.
