Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
What animal uses dirt to keep clean, and is more populous than people? The answer, the chicken, may come as a surprise, but this book is full of little-known facts (e.g., who would have guessed that hens are friendly?). In this book, part of the "Farmyard Friends" series, the author explores the life cycle of a chicken and unearths facts that will both enlighten and entertain young readers. The book explains the basic facts about what a chicken is, what it looks like, where it lives, and what it eats. Some of the different breeds are also described. The book explains why humans farm chickens, and describes the importance of poultry as a food source for humans. Each topic is presented in a two-page spread containing color photographs that are explained with minimal text. The photographs are also labeled, which is useful for younger readers. Throughout the book a cute cartoon character, a bluebird, presents "Farmyard Facts," sidebars with additional information. The book contains a glossary, an index, and a section entitled, "Notes for Parents and Teachers," which provides ideas and suggestions for further learning activities. This book is a good introductory book about chickens for young readers. Teachers and parents should note that there are similarities between this book and other books in the "Farmyard Friends" series: the style, the layout, the "Notes" section, and the cartoon bluebird are identical in all of them. Thus, if readers enjoy or find one of the books in this "Farmyard Friends" series useful, they are likely to enjoy them all. Reviewer: Leona Illig
