Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
A "Have you ever..." or "Did you know..." question begins each chapter about different parts of the life cycle of chickens. The text provides introductory information about chickens. Color photographs show chickens at various stages in their life cycle; some of the pictures would have benefited with a label to connect the main text with the photograph. There are insets with interesting pieces of information. The bold print words in the main text are located in the glossary. Some children may wish to explore the web sites listed. At the back of the book, there is an egg decorating project that is superfluous and does not help to extend understanding of the life cycle of a chicken. This book is part of the "Watch Them Grow" series which cover the life cycles of butterflies, cows, frogs, robins, and trees. Considering the animals listed, a reptile and a fish would have been a better part of the series rather than trees. There is no advising consultant listed for the series. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
