Overview

What happens at Nuthatcher Farm when the chickens get tired of the same old chicken feed? The rooster hatches a plan! With a pinch of genius, a dash of resourcefulness, and a little pilfering from the farmer's garden, the chickens whip up a scrumptious snack of chips and salsa. When the rest of the barnyard gets a whiff of the spicy smells and want to join in, it can mean only one thing . . . FIESTA! But when the big day arrives, all their spicy southwestern supplies are gone! Could Mr. and Mrs. Nuthatcher have caught on to the flavor craze?

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“Reynolds punctuates his wry, snappy text with the kind of knowing, running jokes that kids love, while Bogan's fiesta-bright comic watercolors evoke the spirit of vintage Warner Bros. animation (astute readers will also note that the barnyard mice seem to be the suppliers of the harder-to-find ingredients).” —Publishers Weekly

“Bogan's big cartoon scenes capture the increasing excitement, as well as the general bliss brought on by plenty of pre-fiesta snacking.” —Kirkus Reviews

“This story is a fun read, with a refrain and a smooth pattern. Bogan's humorous illustrations keep the action moving, and the pages are filled with saturated color and energy. A definite purchase for any library.” —School Library Journal

A funny book that the whole family enjoyed. It doesn't hurt that we like chips/salsa and guacamole a little too much. Check this book out and you're kids will love it!

Chicks and Salsa is one of my favorite books (and also one of my kids favorite books!) Ola! This book is one of a kind, with chickens eating Mexican food, throwing fiestas in the barnyard @ Nuthatcher Farm and getting all the barnyard animals involved in the preparation of Southwestern delicacies. That is, until some of the ingredients come up missing; and the rooster decides it's time to take up French cooking lessons! Read this great, entertaining, fun for the whole family book to learn about Chicks and Salsa!

The illustrations are lively the story is energetic. Like a good picture book, there's something to be discovered on each page. And after you've read it once, you'll probably want to do it all over again just to see what else is going on in these colorful pages. This one's a keeper! Very fun. Olé!

This is a great book that is perfect for little ones just beginning to read. Different animals and foods enter the story in interesting ways. The illustrations are wonderful and make the book come alive. I bought this book for my little nephew and I definitely recommend it if you are looking for a great gift idea. A tip - we had a chance to hear the illustrator read the book at a local bookstore. Don't miss it if you get that opportunity - it was a treat for the kids and a truly interactive experience!

I am having the best time with this book! As an early childhood educator, I've used it to stimulate language, explore absurdities, discover personification, laugh at the sinsiter mouse character, and hunt for hidden pictures in the included poster! My kids are screaming with laughter! OOO-LA-LA, keep them coming!
