Overview

Filled with dazzling color and dynamic forms, this comprehensive volume on Dale Chihuly, one of America's foremost artists working with glass, proves that the medium has transcended the decorative arts to become a means of contemporary artistic expression in its own right. Dale Chihuly has been exploring the plastic potential of blown glass for more than 40 years. His spectacular pieces challenge the apparent fragility of the medium and transport us to a magical world. This exquisite volume follows Chihuly's career through photographs of his series works as well as his monumental site-specific installations. Inspired by nature, Chihuly's pieces explode with color and vibrate with life. Their expressiveness and spontaneity recall Jackson Pollock's action paintings, yet their visceral physicality and playfulness have made these pieces some of the most broadly acclaimed works in contemporary art. As this book shows, Chihuly's work is at once mesmerizing, thought provoking, and visually seductive.

If fans of blown-glass art ever needed confirmation that the medium has moved beyond the constraints of the decorative arts category, this comprehensive survey of Dale Chihuly's work certainly furnishes it. Replete with contextual features and critical essays by fine art museum curators Charbonneau (coeditor, Decorative Arts and Design: The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts' Collection), Nathalie Bondil, Timothy Anglin Burgard, Gerald W.R. Ward, and Davira S. Taragin, as well as a chronology, notes, and hundreds of colorful full-bleed photographs, this exhibition catalog from the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts provides the fullest view of the artist's work to date. Organized by the type of Chihuly's series of blown glassworks including neon, baskets, seaforms, macchia, Persians, Venetians, putti, ikebana, floats, chandeliers and towers, and mille fiori, this 14" by 10" volume covers a rich set of vibrant work inspired predominantly by natural forms and makes the most of its large format. The documentation is superb, the scope is expansive, and the text is expertly presented. VERDICT An outstanding choice for any Chihuly aficionado.—Dan McClure, Pacific Northwest Coll. of Art Lib., Portland, OR
