Overview

Dale Chihuly's "dynamic, improbable, flamboyant, and ravishingly beautiful creations" [Booklist] have dazzled the public for over three decades, and have won him international fame as the premier artist working in glass today. His blown glass works are on display in more than 180 museums around the world. But perhaps nothing Chihuly has done can match the drama and emotional impact of his spectacular large-scale installations. These grand projects, their objectives and solutions, are the focus of this glorious volume.

From the resplendent towers in Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000 to the ceiling sculpture made of over 2,000 hand-blown forms in the lobby of the Bellagio Resort in Las Vegas, the audacity and inventiveness of Chihuly's vision comes across on every page. A splendid companion volume to Abrams' very successful Chihuly, which offered a general overview, this new book, with its focus on his most imposing creations and its essays by Barbara Rose and Dale M. Lanzone, will delight all art lovers, collectors, curators, and glass artists.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
After three decades in the public eye, Dale Chihuly stands today as the preeminent artist among those whose medium of choice is glass; his work, at once whimsical and substantial, is greatly admired both by those in the art establishment and by the general public; it is on display in more than 180 museums around the world. Chihuly Projects provides an excellent overview of the artist's career, depicting in lush, full-color photography more than 30 of the artist's most acclaimed installations, housed in museums and public spaces around the world from Nuutajärvi, Finland, to Hakone, Japan, to New York, New York.
Library Journal
Chihuly's large-scale glass installations are described by art critic Rose as "an incredibly generous and spectacular public art that can delight and amaze, transport and stimulate." The same can be said for the brightly colored full-page photographs of 33 projects from Chihuly's workshop that form the bulk of this book. Photographs of both finished installations and various stages in their creation, as well as written comments by Chihuly and members of his workshop, give readers a sense of how these works were created. Essays by Rose and Lanzone make references to so many artists and critics that they will not be meaningful to readers who do not already have wide knowledge of art, but most of the book can be enjoyed by general readers, though Donald Kuspit and Jack Cowart's Chihuly (Abrams, 1999. 2d ed.) provides a fuller overview of Chihuly's glass art.--Kathryn Wekselman, M.Ln., Cincinnati Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Bart Schneider
This volume—an orgiastic visual record of numerous large-scale Chihuly installations around the world—demonstrates both the supple quality of glass and the transformative power of Chihuly's art...Chihuly Projects gives us our best view yet of the ways in which Chihuly has colonized the visual world.
