Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4-7Brief overviews of two contemporary problems. The first title covers neglect and physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. The second looks at what drugs are, why they are misused, addiction and dependency, kicking the habit, and what can be done about drug abuse. In both books, the textual material is clearly and succinctly presented; however, the concurrent comic strips are confusing in content and appearance. Frames do not necessarily follow across the page, making it hard to know what to read next. Also, the story lines portrayed in them are too vague, have too many characters, and try to address too many issues. The illustrations are poorly drawn and the lettered text is difficult to read. The overall tone of the actual text is conversational, objective, and encouraging about getting help. Lists of telephone and counseling and education organizations are appended. While Margaret Hyde's "Know about" series (Walker), Gail Stewart's Child Abuse (Crestwood, 1989), Brian Ward's Drugs and Drug Abuse (Watts, 1988; o.p.), and Dennis Fradin's Drug Abuse (Childrens, 1988) are all for slightly older audiences, they are better choices.Peg Glisson, Dewitt Road School, Webster, NY
