Description: This is an update of a book last published in 2005 that provides a first, general overview of child and adolescent psychiatry, including many of the relevant diagnoses, treatment options, and conceptual framework.
Purpose: According to the authors, their purpose is to provide a book covering the core of child and adolescent psychiatry. Their goal was to be brief, clear, practical, up-to-date, accurate, and relevant, and they succeed. A book that is a relatively quick read and hits the important issues makes the subject more approachable than most in this area, although, understandably, it provides less detail and is less thorough.
Audience: The audience includes psychiatry trainees, general practitioners (including pediatricians), and students in the medical and nursing fields. The authors are both professors in the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College, London.
Features: The first section is a general introduction to the assessment of struggling children/adolescents, as well as a general framework with which to consider the classification of the various diagnoses. The bulk of the book is dedicated to covering all of the relevant diagnoses one by one, including diagnostic criteria and conceptualization, epidemiology, and treatment approaches. The final two sections present risk factors that can predispose a child to having psychiatric issues, as well as a general look at interventions that can help prevent issues from arising, or ameliorate symptoms that have already appeared. These last two sections are a relatively unique approach to treatment, which can help beginning practitioners or students be more aware of generally helpful things that can be done.
Assessment: Overall, this is a great introduction to child and adolescent psychiatry. It provides a general overview and looks at specific diagnoses and treatments, without getting bogged down in too many details, or going beyond the level necessary for the target audience. It is up to date and accurate, and is a helpful update to the previous edition. Those needing more detail will want to look elsewhere, but this is a good approachable read that doesn't run too long. It also provides a nice perspective and guide to conceptualization of the field as a whole and its relevant issues.

This introductory text, reflecting both DSM-IV and ICD-10 terminology, describes the epidemiology, assessment, risk factors, and treatment of child psychiatric disorders and includes a section discussing specific childhood disorders. The authors' intent is to present a brief, clinically based, scientifically accurate book on child psychiatry that is relevant for professional examinations. According to the authors, this text should be useful to trainees in psychiatry, pediatrics, and family medicine as well as for experienced clinicians and members of affiliated disciplines such as social work and education. The authors are experienced clinicians. Multiple tables provide clarification of the text. There are brief but current reference lists at the end of each chapter. The concluding chapter contains examination questions. This is a basic, concise text most beneficial to medical students, psychiatry residents, and other students and professionals in allied pediatric disciplines working with children with psychiatric disorders. The examination questions are helpful in reinforcing the material. Although the epidemiological information provides a quick reference source, discussions of treatments in this text are not in-depth enough to function as a desktop guide for a practicing clinician. This book is recommended as a good introductory text or brief review of child psychiatry.
