Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Nicholas Greco IV, MS, BCETS, CATSM (Columbia College of Missouri)
Description: This is a phenomenal handbook on treating children and adolescents who have been exposed to trauma or loss-related issues. It is written in an easy-to-understand format and is an in-depth tool for child and adolescent psychologists and psychiatrists.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide mental health professionals with the tools and techniques to effectively provide treatment to trauma-exposed children and adolescents. The author centers the book on trauma-informed therapy and provides readers with the knowledge and skills to use these techniques in their practice. This much needed book clearly exceeds the author's objectives.
Audience: Mental health professionals such as psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers will get the most out of this book. Other individuals such as counselors, shelter workers, and parents will benefit from the insight and knowledge the author provides.
Features: Interestingly enough, this book was designed as the text for a standalone five-day course that the author has provided for mental health professionals. Readers will benefit from either practicing the steps and techniques on their own or, most ideally, with one or more other clinicians. Understanding trauma in children and adolescents is difficult, but the first chapter deals with this topic in a clear way. A standout chapter is Taking Care of Yourself, because those who work with traumatized individuals know that they need to be aware of their own limitations and health. Chapters on parent training and self control skills training provide the necessary foundation to encourage safety and strength. The 23 chapters are grouped into five sections, all of which are crucial and provide the necessary framework to work with traumatized children and adolescents. Readers will understand trauma, develop effective treatment plans, promote empowerment with their clients, help to resolve and deal with trauma through exposure sessions, and finally be able to encourage healthy behaviors.
Assessment: Simply put — this is the essential handbook for working with traumatized children and adolescents. If there is one resource, one guide that you buy this year, make it this book.
